CHAPTER 14: THE FATHER WHO CAME BACK FROM THE DEAD

“Your real father is still alive.”
The words stayed on the screen.
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
Because everyone in that room had spent years believing they knew the truth.
And suddenly…
Everything was a lie.
Nathaniel stared at the message.
His face was impossible to read.
Pain.
Confusion.
Betrayal.
All at once.
“No.”
The word came out quietly.
Almost like he was trying to convince himself.
“No.”
Eleanor looked at the screen.
For the first time since I met her…
She looked afraid.
Not angry.
Not confident.
Afraid.
“That’s impossible.”
Nathaniel noticed.
And that scared him more.
Because Eleanor Graves did not fear anything.
“What do you know?”
His voice became dangerous.
Eleanor looked at him.
“I know that Daniel was a liar.”
The screen flickered again.
Daniel’s voice returned.
“If you are watching this, then Eleanor found Ruby.”
Everyone froze.
Daniel continued.
“I knew she would.”
Nathaniel stepped closer to the screen.
“Daniel…”
It was the first time I heard him say that name without anger.
Only sadness.
Daniel appeared on the video.
Older.
Tired.
But alive.
He looked directly into the camera.
“Ruby.”
My heart stopped.
“If you are old enough to see this…”
He smiled sadly.
“I’m sorry I couldn’t be there.”
My eyes filled with tears.
I had spent my entire life wondering about a man I never knew.
A father who was supposed to be dead.
And now…
He was looking at me.
“Your mother wanted to tell you the truth.”
Daniel continued.
“But she was afraid.”
The video paused.
Then:
“Everyone will tell you that blood decides family.”
He looked serious.
“They’re wrong.”
A pause.
“Family is who protects you.”
I looked at Nathaniel.
He was staring at the screen.
Because those words meant something to him.
Eleanor stepped forward.
“Turn it off.”
Nobody moved.
She looked angry now.
“Turn it off!”
Nathaniel turned.
“You knew.”
Silence.
“You knew Daniel was alive.”
Eleanor didn’t answer.
That was enough.
Nathaniel’s expression changed.
“You knew.”
Her face hardened.
“Yes.”
The room became silent.
“Where is he?”
Eleanor smiled coldly.
“You still don’t understand.”
“Where?”
“You think this was about Daniel?”
She laughed.
“It was never about him.”
She looked at me.
“It was always about you.”
Nathaniel moved toward her.
“You destroyed my family.”
Eleanor looked at him.
“No.”
She shook her head.
“I saved it.”
“By taking my daughter?”
“By making you stronger.”
Nathaniel’s eyes filled with anger.
“You took twelve years from me.”
“And those twelve years built the man you became.”
The words were cruel.
But Nathaniel didn’t answer.
Because he finally understood something.
Eleanor never loved him.
She only shaped him.
Suddenly…
The building shook.
A loud explosion came from below.
The lights flickered.
Everyone looked around.
Eleanor smiled.
“Finally.”
Nathaniel narrowed his eyes.
“What did you do?”
“I called someone.”
The doors opened.
Armed men entered.
But they weren’t Eleanor’s guards.
They weren’t Sebastian’s men.
They wore a symbol.
The silver snake.
The Black Viper.
A man walked through the crowd.
Older.
Scarred.
Walking with a slight limp.
Everyone stopped.
Because Nathaniel knew him.
Emily knew him.
Even Eleanor looked surprised.
The man looked at me.
And tears filled his eyes.
“Ruby.”
My heart stopped.
I didn’t know him.
But somehow…
Something inside me recognized him.
Like a forgotten song.
Like a memory buried too deep.
“Who are you?”
The man looked at Nathaniel.
Then at Emily.
Finally, he looked back at me.
“I’m sorry it took so long.”
A tear rolled down his face.
“I’m your father.”
The room exploded with silence.
Nathaniel stepped back.
Daniel Carter.
Alive.
Standing right in front of us.
Emily covered her mouth.
“No…”
Daniel looked at her.
“Emily.”
She started crying.
“You’re alive.”
He nodded.
“I was always alive.”
Nathaniel stared.
“You let me believe you were dead.”
Daniel looked at him.
“I had no choice.”
“You had twelve years.”
“I spent twelve years trying to get back.”
Nathaniel’s anger returned.
“Then why didn’t you?”
Daniel looked at Eleanor.
And everyone understood.
Eleanor’s face changed.
For the first time…
She wasn’t in control.
Daniel looked at her.
“You lost, Eleanor.”
She laughed.
“You think walking in here changes anything?”
Daniel smiled.
“Yes.”
He looked at me.
“Because she finally knows.”
Eleanor looked at me.
“What does she know?”
Daniel answered.
“The truth.”
Daniel walked toward me slowly.
“I need you to understand something, Ruby.”
I looked at him.
“Your mother didn’t abandon you.”
A tear fell.
“She protected you.”
He looked at Nathaniel.
“And Nathaniel…”
Nathaniel stared.
“You were never a mistake.”
A pause.
“You were the only person who could protect her if I failed.”
Nathaniel looked away.
Because those words hurt.
Suddenly, Sebastian appeared.
Everyone turned.
He looked at Daniel.
“I thought you were dead.”
Daniel smiled.
“You weren’t the only one who believed that.”
Sebastian looked ashamed.
For the first time, he looked like a broken man.
“I helped her.”
Nathaniel looked at him.
“I know.”
Sebastian lowered his head.
“I thought I was becoming powerful.”
A pause.
“I was just another victim.”
Then Eleanor reached inside her coat.
Everyone froze.
Nathaniel shouted:
“No!”
But she was faster.
She pulled out a small device.
A detonator.
Her eyes were cold.
“If I lose…”
She smiled.
“Everyone loses.”
The building alarm started screaming.
Red lights flashed.
Daniel looked at the device.
“No.”
Eleanor laughed.
“The Black Viper was never a company.”
She looked around.
“It was never an organization.”
A pause.
“It was a promise.”
Nathaniel stepped forward.
“What did you do?”
Eleanor smiled.
“I built everything to survive.”
She pressed the button.
Nothing happened.
Her smile disappeared.
“What?”
Daniel looked at her.
“You really thought I wouldn’t prepare?”
The doors behind her opened.
Police.
Federal agents.
Everyone rushed inside.
Eleanor stared.
“How?”
Daniel looked at Ruby.
“Because twelve years ago…”
He smiled.
“I hid the truth somewhere even she couldn’t reach.”
Eleanor looked confused.
“Where?”
Daniel answered:
“Inside the one person you underestimated.”
He looked at me.
“Her heart.”
Eleanor Graves was finally arrested.
The Black Viper collapsed.
The secrets that controlled the city came into the light.
But as the sun rose over the city…
One question remained.
A question that changed my life forever.
I stood between two men.
Two fathers.
One who gave me life.
One who saved it.
Nathaniel looked at Daniel.
Then at me.
And quietly asked:
“Ruby…”
He paused.
“Who do you choose?”
May you like
