CHAPTER 8: THE DAUGHTER WHO CAME BACK DIFFERENT

“She’s been waiting for you.”

Sebastian Graves’ words followed us long after he disappeared.

Clara is alive.

For twelve years, Nathaniel Graves believed his daughter was gone forever.

For twelve years, he carried the pain of losing her.

For twelve years, he searched through every missing person report, every hidden file, every rumor.

And now…

The impossible truth was standing in front of him.

His daughter was alive.

But Sebastian’s final warning wouldn’t leave his mind.

“She’s not the little girl you remember anymore.”

Nathaniel stood in the middle of the apartment.

Silent.

Motionless.

Like his body was still there…

But his mind had already gone somewhere else.

To a little girl with a star necklace.

To bedtime stories.

To tiny hands holding his finger.

To a child who used to say:

“Daddy, when I grow up, I’m going to protect you.”

I watched him.

For the first time, I understood something.

Nathaniel Graves wasn’t afraid of losing his empire.

He was afraid of losing his daughter twice.

“Mr. Graves…”

I stopped.

The words felt wrong.

After everything that happened…

Calling him that felt like putting a wall between us.

“Dad?”

The word surprised both of us.

Nathaniel looked at me.

His eyes became wet.

But he quickly looked away.

Like he didn’t want anyone to see.

“Yes?”

His voice was quiet.

“Are you going to find her?”

He looked at me.

“Clara?”

I nodded.

Nathaniel took a breath.

“I’m going to bring her home.”

My mother sat at the kitchen table.

She looked smaller than I had ever seen her.

Not like my mother.

Like someone carrying a mountain of regret.

“Mom…”

She looked up.

“I need answers.”

She nodded.

“I know.”

“No more secrets.”

Another tear rolled down her face.

“I promise.”

I sat across from her.

“Was Clara really my twin?”

“Yes.”

“Did she know about me?”

Emily looked down.

“She knew you existed.”

My heart tightened.

“What does that mean?”

“When you were born, you were sick.”

I frowned.

“What?”

“You spent weeks in the hospital.”

She touched my hand.

“You were fragile.”

I listened quietly.

“Clara was only three years old, but she refused to leave your side.”

A small smile appeared on my mother’s face.

“She would sit beside your crib and tell everyone, ‘That’s my baby sister.’”

I felt tears forming.

“But then…”

Emily’s smile disappeared.

“Then the Black Viper found out about you.”

Nathaniel returned from the hallway.

“We need to move.”

Everyone looked at him.

“Where?”

“A place Sebastian doesn’t know.”

My mother shook her head.

“There is no such place.”

Nathaniel looked at her.

“Then tell me where Clara is.”

Emily hesitated.

That hesitation said everything.

“You know.”

Nathaniel stepped closer.

“Emily.”

Her eyes filled with fear.

“I have an address.”

The room became silent.

“Where?”

She looked at him.

“The old Graves family estate.”

Nathaniel froze.

“That property was abandoned.”

“No.”

Emily shook her head.

“They wanted everyone to believe that.”

Nathaniel’s face hardened.

“Who has been there?”

Emily whispered:

“Clara.”

The old Graves estate sat outside the city.

A massive house hidden behind tall iron gates.

A place Nathaniel hadn’t visited since his childhood.

A place full of memories.

And secrets.

The journey there was silent.

I sat in the back seat with my mother.

Nathaniel sat in front.

Everyone was thinking about the same thing.

What would we find?

A missing child?

A victim?

Or someone completely different?

When we arrived, the gates were open.

That scared Nathaniel more than if they had been locked.

“This is wrong.”

One guard looked at him.

“Sir?”

“Nobody opens those gates.”

They slowly entered.

The house looked abandoned.

But it wasn’t.

The lights were on.

Someone was living there.

Nathaniel stepped out.

His hands were shaking.

Not from fear.

From emotion.

“Clara?”

No answer.

They entered the house.

The walls were covered with old family photos.

Nathaniel walked slowly.

Then he stopped.

A picture on the wall.

A picture he had never seen.

Two little girls.

Ruby and Clara.

Together.

Playing in the garden.

On the back was a handwritten message.

“Sisters forever.”

Nathaniel touched the picture.

Then whispered:

“She knew.”

A sound came from upstairs.

A door closing.

Everyone looked up.

Nathaniel immediately moved.

“Stay behind me.”

They climbed the stairs.

Slowly.

Carefully.

At the end of the hallway was one room.

The door was slightly open.

Nathaniel reached for the handle.

His breathing became heavier.

For twelve years…

He dreamed about this moment.

He pushed the door open.

And froze.

Inside was a young woman.

Around fifteen years old.

She stood beside a desk filled with documents.

Her hair was dark.

Her eyes were cold.

But there was something familiar.

Something impossible to miss.

She looked at Nathaniel.

And smiled.

“Hello, Father.”

Nathaniel couldn’t speak.

The guards lowered their weapons.

Emily covered her mouth.

Because she recognized her.

But I didn’t.

Not yet.

The girl looked at me.

And something strange happened.

Her expression changed.

Not surprise.

Not happiness.

Recognition.

“Ruby.”

My heart stopped.

“How do you know my name?”

The girl walked closer.

Because she wasn’t a stranger.

She was my sister.

“My whole life…”

She whispered.

“I was told you were the reason I lost everything.”

I stepped back.

“What?”

Nathaniel looked confused.

“Clara…”

She looked at him.

The warmth disappeared.

“You finally came back.”

A long silence.

Then she said:

“But you’re twelve years too late.”

Nathaniel looked destroyed.

“Clara, I searched for you.”

“No.”

Her voice was cold.

“You searched for the daughter you remembered.”

She pointed toward the documents on the desk.

“You never searched for the person I became.”

Emily began crying.

“Clara…”

Clara looked at her.

“You lied too.”

Nobody moved.

Then Clara picked up a folder.

Inside were photos.

Names.

Records.

Proof.

“I know everything.”

Nathaniel stared.

“What do you know?”

Clara looked at him.

“The truth about the night I disappeared.”

A pause.

“And the truth about who betrayed you.”

Nathaniel stepped forward.

“Who?”

Clara looked directly at him.

Then said:

“The person standing closest to you.”

Everyone became still.

Nathaniel looked around.

His guards.

His family.

His memories.

“Who?”

Clara’s eyes moved to one person.

And when she spoke…

The entire world changed.

“Your mother.”

May you like
