Chapter 9 - The Evidence Buried in Ash

The fire alarm screamed through the warehouse.
Water poured from the ceiling.
The burning documents collapsed into black ash.
Police dragged Paulina away from the table.
She did not resist.
She only smiled at Marisol.
“Now you will never know what his father really planned.”
Marisol ignored her and ran to Valentina.
Diego placed the child into her arms.
Marisol kissed Valentina’s face again and again.
“I’m sorry, Mommy.”
“No.”
Marisol held her tighter.
“You did nothing wrong.”
Diego crouched beside them.
“Are you hurt?”
Valentina shook her head.
“The lady said you didn’t want me.”
Diego’s face broke.
He took her small hand.
“She lied.”
“I wanted you before I even knew how much I had lost.”
Valentina looked at him carefully.
“Are you my daddy?”
“Yes.”
“Forever?”
Diego swallowed.
“Forever.”
Paulina watched from across the warehouse.
For the first time, her expression showed something deeper than anger.
She looked terrified.
The police found multiple phones, fake passports, financial records, and forged identity documents inside Arturo’s office.
But the burned custody agreement and trust records could not be recovered.
The deposit box required both the key and an authorization code.
The code had died with Diego’s father.
By sunrise, the story had reached every major news outlet.
But Paulina’s family released their version first.
They claimed Marisol had invented the kidnapping to pressure Diego into recognizing Valentina.
They claimed the warehouse had been rented under one of Marisol’s stolen company identities.
They published the photograph of her outside the bank.
They published copies of fake transfers.
They described her as a former employee who had seduced a wealthy businessman and used a child to gain access to his fortune.
Outside the mansion gates, reporters gathered in dozens.
Cameras followed every car.
Headlines appeared across the internet.

Villaseñor Heiress or Carefully Planned Fraud?
Diego’s company shares fell before noon.
The board called an emergency meeting.
His lawyers advised him to separate publicly from Marisol until the investigation ended.
Diego refused.
“They kidnapped my daughter.”
One board member spoke through the video call.
“The public does not know she is your daughter.”
“The DNA result is being challenged.”
“By the family that stole her?”
“The laboratory sample chain has been questioned.”
Diego stood.
“Then we will take another test.”
“The company cannot survive this scandal.”
“My daughter survived being hidden for three years.”
“The company can survive a week of bad headlines.”
The board voted to suspend him temporarily.
Diego ended the call before they finished announcing the result.
Marisol stood at the study door.
“You lost control of your company because of us.”
“No.”
“I lost control because I trusted the wrong people.”
“You should separate yourself from me.”
Diego looked at her.
“Is that what you want?”
She hesitated.
“It is what protects you.”
“I am finished choosing protection over truth.”
A police car arrived at the mansion.
Detective Elena Vargas entered carrying a sealed evidence bag.
“We searched Paulina’s apartment.”
Inside the bag was Valentina’s birth certificate.
Marisol looked shocked.
“She stole it from my room.”
“There was also cash.”
“How much?”
“Three million pesos.”
Marisol shook her head.
“That money is not mine.”
“We found it beneath your mattress.”
“I have never seen it before.”
The detective’s expression remained professional.
“We also found a handwritten plan describing how to approach Diego and claim paternity.”
Marisol’s face drained.
Paulina had prepared everything.
The police now had evidence making Marisol look like the architect of the fraud.
Detective Vargas lowered her voice.
“I believe someone planted it.”
“But belief is not enough.”
“Until we confirm the source of the money, you must come with me for questioning.”
Valentina grabbed Marisol’s leg.
“No!”
Diego stepped forward.
“She is not going anywhere alone.”
The detective shook her head.
“You may follow us.”
“But she has to come.”
Marisol knelt and held Valentina.
“I will be back soon.”
Valentina began sobbing.
“You said that before the bad lady took me.”
Marisol’s heart shattered.
Diego lifted the child into his arms.
“I will stay with you.”
“I promise your mother will come home.”
As the police led Marisol outside, reporters surged against the gates.
They shouted accusations.
They called her a liar.
They called her a thief.
They asked how much money she wanted for the child.
Marisol kept her head down.
Then one reporter shouted a question that made her stop.
“Ms. Cruz, is it true Diego Villaseñor is not Valentina’s biological father?”
Marisol turned.
The reporter held up a document.

It was a second DNA result.
This one said Diego was not the father.
