Chapter 8 - The Warehouse Without Windows

Diego drove faster.
Marisol held the phone, replaying the video.
“Pause it.”
Diego glanced at the screen.
“What?”
“The sound behind her.”
Marisol turned up the volume.
A train horn echoed faintly.
Then came the metallic rhythm of machinery.
Diego changed direction.
“The construction site is a trap.”
“What do you mean?”
“There are no railway tracks near that property.”
“Arturo wants us to go there while Valentina is somewhere else.”
Marisol listened again.
“The laundry factory.”
Diego looked at her.
“What factory?”
“There is an abandoned textile warehouse near the old railway.”
“Paulina took me there once to collect imported curtains.”
“She complained that the building belonged to her father and was losing money.”
Diego called Gabriel.
“Send one team to the construction site.”
“Send everyone else to the Robles textile warehouse near the freight line.”
They reached the industrial district fifteen minutes later.
Rain struck the windshield.
The warehouse stood behind a rusted metal fence.
Most of its windows had been covered with black paint.
Diego parked two streets away.
Police units waited for Gabriel’s signal.
Marisol grabbed the door handle.
“Stay in the car.”
“No.”
“Marisol.”
“She will call for me.”
“And when she does, I need to answer.”
They entered through a broken side gate.
Inside, old machinery formed dark rows beneath the leaking roof.
A child’s cry echoed from the upper floor.
“Mommy!”
Marisol ran.
Diego caught her arm.
“Wait.”
A spotlight suddenly turned on.
Arturo Mendoza stood on a steel walkway above them.
He was in his fifties, with silver hair and a tailored suit.
He smiled at Marisol as though greeting a relative at dinner.
“You always were impatient.”
Marisol stared at him.
“Where is my daughter?”
“Safe.”
“Let me see her.”
“First, you will sign several documents.”
Arturo nodded toward a table.
A folder rested beside a pen.
“What documents?”
“A statement confirming you created the shell companies.”
“A confession that you manipulated Diego.”
“And a transfer of Valentina’s custody.”
Marisol’s face twisted.
“You will never take my child.”
Arturo sighed.
“You said the same thing when you were seventeen.”
Diego stepped forward.
“You used her identity to steal from my company.”
Arturo smiled.
“Your company was already stealing from itself.”
“I merely redirected what your family owed us.”
“Us?”
Armando Robles emerged from behind a machine.
Paulina stood beside him.
She had changed out of her silk robe.
Her face was pale, but her posture remained proud.
Diego stared at her.
“You were released?”
“My lawyer proved the vial was planted.”
Paulina smiled.
“Money creates truth very quickly.”
Marisol looked around.
“Where is Valentina?”
A door opened on the walkway.
The little girl stood behind a security guard.
Her wrists were free now.
But fear covered her face.
“Mommy!”
Marisol moved forward.
The guard blocked Valentina.
Arturo picked up the folder.
“Sign.”
“No.”
“Then your daughter remains with us.”
Diego’s voice was steady.
“You will not leave this building.”
Armando laughed.
“The police are surrounding an empty construction site.”
“The telephone signal sent them exactly where we wanted.”
Diego looked toward the roof.
A tiny red light flashed near the beam.
Gabriel’s drone.
The police knew their location.
Diego needed time.
He walked toward the table.
“Give me the documents.”
Paulina watched him.
“You are considering it?”
“I will sign anything that brings Valentina down.”
Marisol looked at him in disbelief.
“Diego, no.”
He met her eyes.
Trust me.
The message was silent but clear.
Arturo slid the documents toward him.
Diego read the first page slowly.
“What guarantee do I have that you will release her?”
“You have my word.”
Diego laughed once.
“Your word is worth less than the paper.”
Paulina stepped closer.
“You should have married me.”
“None of this would have happened.”
Diego looked at her.
“You stole my daughter’s first three years.”
“You cannot blame me for what you were too blind to see.”
The cruelty of the sentence struck everyone.
Paulina realized too late that she had admitted knowing the truth.
A police voice thundered through the warehouse.
“Drop your weapons!”
The side doors burst open.
Officers flooded the building.
The guard holding Valentina panicked.
He pulled her backward.
Marisol screamed.
Diego ran toward the stairs.
Paulina grabbed the folder and set it on fire with a lighter.
“You will never prove anything!”
Flames climbed the pages.
Arturo tried to escape across the walkway.
Gabriel tackled him near the railing.
Armando was arrested beside the loading doors.
Diego reached Valentina.
The guard released her and raised his hands.
Valentina threw herself into Diego’s arms.
“Daddy!”
The word stopped him.
She had never called him that before.
Diego held her tightly.
“I’m here.”
“I’ve got you.”
“You’re safe.”
Below them, Paulina stood beside the burning folder.
She looked up at Marisol with pure hatred.
Then she threw something small into the flames.
Marisol recognized it immediately.
