Chapter 12 - The Night the Mansion Went Silent

Diego immediately showed the message to Gabriel.
Security doubled around the property.
Every door was checked.
Every camera was monitored.
Marisol wanted to take Valentina somewhere else.
Diego refused.
“Moving her now exposes her on the road.”
“The mansion is secure.”
Paulina knew the mansion.
She knew the service corridors.
She knew the staff schedules.
She knew which cameras had blind spots.
At midnight, the security system failed.
Every screen turned black.
The emergency generator did not start.
Gabriel swore under his breath.
“This is an internal override.”
Diego looked toward the upper floor.
“Valentina.”
He ran upstairs.
Marisol was already moving toward the child’s bedroom.
They found the bed empty.
The window was locked.
The hallway door was still closed.
Then they heard Valentina’s voice from the bathroom.
“Mommy?”
Marisol opened the door.
Valentina stood inside holding her rabbit.
A woman in a housekeeper’s uniform was crouched beside her.
The woman turned.
Paulina.
She had cut her hair and covered part of her face with a medical mask.
In one hand, she held a syringe.
In the other, she held Valentina’s shoulder.
Diego stopped in the doorway.
“Let her go.”
Paulina smiled.
“You always did arrive one moment too late.”
Marisol stepped forward.
“Do not touch her.”
“Stay back.”
Paulina lifted the syringe.
“It is only a sedative.”
“But a child her size can be unpredictable.”
Valentina began to tremble.
“Daddy.”
Diego’s face changed at the word.
Paulina heard it.
Her eyes filled with rage.
“She calls you that after two days?”
“She looked at me for three years and said nothing.”
Marisol’s voice was steady.
“She was a child.”
“You were the adult who chose cruelty.”
Paulina pressed the needle closer to Valentina’s arm.
“Do not lecture me.”
“You walked into this house and stole the life I built.”
Marisol shook her head.
“You built it on letters you stole.”
“You built it on a child you erased.”
“You built it on a man you lied to every day.”
Paulina’s hand trembled.
Diego saw it.
“Paulina, look at me.”
She did.
“You do not want to hurt Valentina.”
“You do not know what I want.”
“You want me to suffer.”
“Yes.”
“Then let her go.”
“Take me instead.”
Marisol turned sharply.
“No.”
Paulina smiled.
“There is the great Diego Villaseñor.”
“Always believing he can buy or trade his way out.”
“This is not a negotiation.”
Diego stepped into the bathroom.
Paulina pressed the syringe against Valentina’s skin.
“Stop.”
He stopped.
Marisol looked at the mirror behind Paulina.
The bathroom mirror reflected the hallway.
Gabriel was approaching silently.
Paulina could not see him.
Marisol needed to keep her attention forward.
“Paulina.”
“What?”
“You said you loved Diego before you even knew him.”
“I did love him.”
“No.”
“You loved defeating every woman who came before you.”
Paulina’s face twisted.
“You think you understand me?”
“I understand that you could not bear a three-year-old child receiving one smile from him.”
Paulina moved toward Marisol.
“You should have stayed invisible.”
Gabriel entered behind her.
He grabbed Paulina’s wrist.
The syringe fell.
Diego pulled Valentina away.
Marisol caught her daughter.
Paulina screamed and fought against Gabriel.
“You ruined everything!”
Police rushed into the bedroom.
They forced Paulina to the floor and handcuffed her.
As they pulled her up, she looked at Diego.
“You still do not know the worst part.”
Diego held Valentina against his chest.
“There is nothing left you can say.”
Paulina smiled through tears.
“Ask Marisol why she applied for this job under a false last name.”
Diego looked at Marisol.
Her face changed.
Paulina laughed as the police led her away.
May you like
“She did not accidentally find your mansion.”
“She came here looking for you.”
