Chapter 7 - The Child They Used as a Doorway

Diego crushed the hidden phone beneath his shoe.

The screen shattered.

Valentina began crying.

“My rabbit!”

Marisol knelt beside her.

“It’s all right, sweetheart.”

“We can fix him.”

Diego picked up the toy and handed it back gently.

“I am sorry.”

Valentina looked at him through tears.

“Bad phone hurt him.”

Diego swallowed.

“Yes.”

“The bad phone will never hurt him again.”

Gabriel examined the torn seam.

“This device was placed recently.”

Marisol looked horrified.

“Paulina gave Valentina the rabbit a new ribbon yesterday.”

“She must have opened it.”

Diego’s expression hardened.

“She used a child to spy on us.”

Gabriel received an alert on his tablet.

“Sir, we have a breach at the rear gate.”

The security screens flickered.

A delivery van had stopped outside the servants’ entrance.

Two men in utility uniforms stepped out.

They showed forged maintenance documents.

The gate guard refused entry.

Then the mansion lost power.

The chandeliers went dark.

Valentina screamed.

Diego reached for her.

Marisol pulled the child into her arms.

“Stay behind me.”

Emergency lights came on.

Red shadows filled the hallway.

Gabriel’s radio crackled.

“Two intruders inside the eastern corridor.”

Diego opened a concealed drawer in the study and removed a licensed handgun.

Marisol stared at him.

“Take Valentina to the safe room.”

“I’m not leaving you.”

“This is not an argument.”

A crash sounded near the kitchen.

Gabriel led Marisol and Valentina toward a reinforced door hidden behind the library shelves.

One of the intruders appeared at the end of the hall.

He wore a mask.

He raised a metal bar.

Diego stepped into his path.

“Stop.”

The man charged.

Diego moved aside and struck his arm.

The bar hit the floor.

Gabriel’s security officers tackled the intruder.

The second man escaped through a service window.

Power returned moments later.

The captured intruder refused to speak.

But inside his pocket, the police found a photograph of Valentina.

The back contained instructions.

Take the child.

Leave the mother.

Marisol almost collapsed.

Diego read the words twice.

Then he turned toward the intruder.

“Who paid you?”

The man looked away.

Diego crouched in front of him.

“If anyone touches my daughter, there will be nowhere on this earth for you to hide.”

The man laughed.

“You still think she is here?”

Diego’s blood turned cold.

Marisol looked toward the safe room.

The reinforced door stood open.

Gabriel rushed inside.

The room was empty.

A small service hatch in the rear wall had been forced open.

Valentina’s stuffed rabbit lay on the floor.

Marisol screamed her daughter’s name.

She ran through the hidden passage.

It ended near the laundry room.

A side door stood open.

Outside, tire marks crossed the wet driveway.

Valentina was gone.

Marisol fell to her knees.

“No.”

Diego stood frozen for one second.

Then something inside him changed.

The grief disappeared from his face.

What remained was cold and controlled.

“Close every road leaving this district.”

“Contact airport security.”

“Contact every private airfield.”

“Find the second van.”

Gabriel began issuing orders.

Marisol grabbed Diego’s jacket.

“She is afraid of the dark.”

“She cannot sleep without me.”

Diego held her shoulders.

“We will find her.”

“What if they hurt her?”

“They want leverage.”

“They need her alive.”

Marisol broke down.

Diego pulled her against him.

For one brief moment, they stood together as two parents united by the same terror.

Then Gabriel shouted from the security room.

“We found the van.”

The traffic camera showed it entering an abandoned construction site owned by Villaseñor Development.

Diego recognized the address.

The project had been managed by Arturo Mendoza.

He grabbed his keys.

Marisol followed him.

“You are not coming.”

“She is my daughter.”

“And she is mine.”

Marisol opened the passenger door.

“You lost three years.”

“Do not ask me to lose another minute.”

Diego looked at her.

Then he started the car.

As they sped through the gates, a message appeared on his phone.

It was a video.

Valentina sat alone in a dark room.

Her small hands were tied loosely in front of her.

She was trying not to cry.

Behind the camera, Paulina’s voice spoke calmly.

“Bring me the DNA report and the trust documents.”

“Or the next time you see your daughter, she will not recognize either of you.”
