Chapter 4 - The Hollow Tree

The night grew impossibly dense as Noah hiked off-trail into the thick Underbrush.

The ironwood trees grew close together, their twisted branches locking overhead to block out the moonlight.

His breath bloomed in white clouds as the temperature plummeted once again.

Following the GPS signal on his handheld unit, he stopped before a massive, dying oak tree.

The center of the tree had rotted out, leaving a hollow cavern large enough for a man to stand in.

Inside the hollow hung a silver pendulum, swinging steadily despite the lack of wind.

At the base of the tree sat another cassette player, identical to the ones from the chapel.

Noah knelt, his boots sinking into the wet mud, and pressed down on the Play button.

Instead of static, he heard the sound of heavy rain and screaming.

"He found the well, Noah!" a woman’s voice shrieked through the tiny speaker. "He knows Clara wasn't human!"

The tape snapped, and a sudden rustle of dead leaves exploded behind him.
