Chapter 10 - The Vault of Echoes

The staircase spiraled down deep beneath the bedrock of Maine.

The walls were not made of stone, but of thousands of old cassette tapes woven together like bricks.

Voices whispered from the walls—thousands of different conversations, arguments, and crying children playing all at once.

Noah covered his ears, but the noise echoed inside his skull.

At the bottom of the stairs lay a cavernous chamber centered around a deep stone well.

Floating directly above the well was a mass of dark, liquid shadow suspended in mid-air.

Entangled inside the shadow was the skeletal remains of a young girl, locked in a perpetual state of decay and rebirth.

The bones would break, reform, cover themselves in fresh pale skin, and then dissolve back into dust within seconds.

"It's beautiful, isn't it?" a voice spoke right beside his ear.

Noah whipped around, his flashlight beam catching the small girl in the yellow dress.

She was standing on the edge of the well, her eyes completely void of light.
