Chapter 2 - The Whispering Well

Noah drove back to the station in a cold sweat, every shadow along Route 9 looking like a crouched figure.

The station was silent, lit only by the green glow of the dispatch monitors and the humming emergency lights.

He bypassed his office and headed straight for the basement archives where the cold cases gathered decades of dust.

File 74-B was the Henderson file, a thick manila folder swollen with decaying paper.

Thirty-two years ago, seven-year-old Clara Henderson vanished without leaving a single drop of blood or a stray fiber.

Noah spread the photographs across his metal desk under the harsh fluorescent light.

Among the yellowed crime scene photos was a blueprint of the Black Pine Chapel built in 1892.

According to the original architectural notes, the chapel had not been built on a standard stone foundation.

It was constructed over an old dry well known locally as the Whispering Well.

Noah leaned closer to a black-and-white photo of the town council who funded the construction.

Standing in the back row, partially obscured by shadows, was a man holding a silver cassette recorder.

The man’s face was identical to Noah’s.
