Chapter 6 - THE LAST VIDEO

Nathan stared at the screen.
The phone felt heavier than anything he had ever held.
Because he knew.
Whatever was on that video could destroy everything.
Claire stood behind him.
âNathanâŠâ
He didnât turn around.
âDid you know about this?â
âNo.â
âAre you sure?â
Claire swallowed.
âYes.â
For once, Nathan wanted to believe her.
But trust was not something he had anymore.
He pressed play.
The screen showed darkness.
Then Emilyâs voice.
âNathanâŠâ
His heart shattered.
He hadnât heard her voice in five years.
Not really.
Not like this.
There was fear in it.
âSomething happened.â
The video shook.
Like Emily was recording while moving.
âI donât have much time.â
Nathan covered his mouth.
Claire started crying.
Emily continued.
âIf anything happens to me, you need to knowâŠâ
A noise came from the background.
Someone was there.
Emily suddenly lowered her voice.
âI trusted the wrong person.â
Nathan looked at Claire.
Claire shook her head.
âNo.â
The video continued.
âI thought I knew who loved me.â
Another sound.
A door opening.
Emily whispered:
âOh my God.â
The camera moved.
Then Nathan saw something.
A person standing in the doorway.
The video quality was poor.
But one thing was clear.
The person was wearing a necklace.
A necklace Nathan recognized.
His motherâs necklace.
The same necklace Michaelâs wife had worn for years.
The video suddenly cut.
The room went silent.
Nathan slowly looked at Claire.
âWho else had access to Emilyâs house that night?â
Claire couldnât answer.
Nathan replayed the final seconds.
Again.
And again.
Then he noticed something.
A reflection in the mirror.
Not the person at the door.
Someone else.
Someone standing behind Emily.
Nathan froze.
Because he recognized that face.
It was someone he had trusted.
Someone who cried at Emilyâs funeral.
Someone who told him:
âIâll always protect your family.â
Nathan whispered the name.
âNoâŠâ
Claire looked at him.
âWho is it?â
Nathan stared at the screen.
His voice barely came out.
âIt was my father.â
At that moment, Nathanâs phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
A deep voice spoke.
âYou found the video.â
Nathanâs blood turned cold.
âWho is this?â
The man laughed softly.
âYou should have left the past buried.â
Nathan tightened his grip.
âWhere are you?â
The voice became serious.
âAsk yourself one question, Nathan.â
âWhat?â
âWhy do you think your father died the same year Emily did?â
The call ended.
Nathan stood there frozen.
Because he had just realized something terrifying.
May you like
Emilyâs death was not the beginning of the secret.
It was only the first thing they buried.
