Chapter 4 - THE PERSON BEHIND THE DOOR

The knocking continued.
Three slow knocks.
Not loud.
Not rushed.
Almost like whoever was standing outside already knew they were going to answer.
Nathan stood frozen in the darkness.
Every instinct inside him screamed not to open that door.
Claire grabbed his arm.
âNathan, donât.â
He looked at her.
For the first time in years, he saw something in Claireâs eyes that he had never seen before.
Fear.
Not fake fear.
Not guilt.
Real fear.
âWho is it?â
Claire didnât answer.
âNathanâŠâ
âWho is outside?â
Her lips trembled.
âI donât know.â
But Nathan knew she was lying.
The same way she had lied before.
The same way she had hidden everything.
He slowly moved toward the door.
âDadâŠâ
Lilyâs voice came from behind him.
Nathan turned.
His daughter was holding Noahâs hand.
Both children were terrified.
He immediately walked back and hugged them.
âItâs okay.â
But even he didnât believe those words.
Because nothing had been okay for a long time.
The knocking stopped.
Then Nathan heard a voice.
âNathan Carter?â
His blood ran cold.
The stranger knew his name.
âI need to speak with you.â
Nathan looked through the window.
A man stood outside.
Late fifties.
Gray hair.
Black coat.
Holding a folder.
Nathan opened the door only a few inches.
âWho are you?â
The man looked directly into his eyes.
âMy name is Daniel Brooks.â
Nathan waited.
âI was Emilyâs attorney.â
The world seemed to stop.
âEmily didnât have an attorney.â
Daniel gave him a sad smile.
âThatâs what you were supposed to believe.â
Nathan opened the door wider.
âWhat are you talking about?â
Daniel handed him the folder.
âYour wife was preparing for something before she died.â
Nathan opened it.
Inside were documents.
Bank statements.
Legal papers.
And one handwritten letter.
His hands shook when he recognized Emilyâs handwriting.
Nathan.
If you are reading this, something happened to me.
His heart dropped.
He kept reading.
I need you to trust one thing.
The person closest to you may not be the person who loves you.
Nathan looked up.
âWho knew about this?â
Daniel glanced toward Claire.
Only for a second.
But Nathan noticed.
âYou knew.â
Daniel nodded.
âI tried to warn her.â
âWarn who?â
âEmily.â
Nathanâs face tightened.
âAbout what?â
Daniel looked at the children.
Then lowered his voice.
âAbout the woman she thought she could trust.â
Nathan slowly turned toward Claire.
Claire looked away.
And that was the moment Nathan understood.
Emily wasnât afraid of a stranger.
She was afraid of someone inside her own family.
Later that night, after the children fell asleep, Nathan confronted Claire.
âNo more lies.â
Claire sat silently.
âI want the truth.â
She wiped her tears.
âI never wanted any of this.â
âThen why did you hide it?â
âBecause I was scared.â
âOf who?â
Claire looked at him.
And finally said the name.
âMichael.â
Nathan froze.
His brother.
His best friend.
The person who stood beside him at Emilyâs funeral.
The person who hugged him and said:
âWeâll get through this.â
Nathan stepped back.
âMichael?â
Claire nodded.
âHe knew about Emilyâs money.â
Nathan felt sick.
âWhat did he do?â
Claire whispered:
âHe wasnât helping you recover.â
May you like
âHe was waiting for you to break.â
