Chapter 2 - THE WOMAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH

Nathan stared at the photo for nearly ten minutes.
He couldnât move.
He couldnât blink.
His brain kept trying to reject what his eyes were seeing.
Claire.
His wife.
Standing beside Emilyâs car.
The same car that supposedly lost control on a rainy highway.
The same car where Emily took her last breath.
âNoâŠâ
Nathan whispered.
âThis isnât possible.â
But the picture was real.
The timestamp was real.
And Claire was there.
He printed the photo and placed it on the kitchen table.
Then he waited.
He wanted to see if Claire would tell the truth.
For once.
At breakfast, Claire walked in wearing a calm expression.
Too calm.
âGood morning.â
Nathan didnât answer.
She noticed the paper.
Her face changed instantly.
Just for a second.
But Nathan saw it.
âYou know what this is?â
Claire slowly sat down.
âNathanâŠâ
âAnswer me.â
She looked away.
And that was when he knew.
She knew.
âYou lied to me.â
Claire shook her head.
âI was trying to protect you.â
Nathan laughed.
A painful laugh.
âProtect me?â
âYou let me believe my wife died in an accident.â
âShe did.â
âNo.â
Nathan pushed the photo toward her.
âShe didnât die alone.â
Claireâs eyes filled with tears.
âNathan, you donât understand.â
âThen explain.â
Silence.
Again.
That silence.
The same silence that followed every question Claire didnât want to answer.
Nathan stood.
âWhere were you that night?â
Claire swallowed.
âI told you.â
âI asked where you really were.â
Her hands tightened.
âNathanâŠâ
âWhere were you?â
Finally, she whispered.
âAt the hospital.â
Nathan froze.
âWhat?â
âI followed Emily after she left your house.â
âWhy?â
Claire looked down.
âBecause I knew something was wrong.â
Nathan felt anger rising.
âYou knew something was wrong?â
âYes.â
âAnd you said nothing?â
Claire started crying.
âI was scared.â
âOf what?â
She looked at him.
And her answer made him even colder.
âOf the people who wanted Emily gone.â
That afternoon, Nathan went through every file connected to Emilyâs death.
Police reports.
Insurance documents.
Medical records.
Everything.
And then he found something strange.
The life insurance payout.
The money never went into Emilyâs account.
It went into a trust.
A trust managed by someone Nathan trusted completely.
His own brother.
Michael.
Nathan immediately called him.
âMichael, we need to talk.â
His brother answered casually.
âSure. Whatâs up?â
Nathan looked at the documents.
âI found some financial records.â
A pause.
âWhat kind of records?â
âThe ones involving Emilyâs insurance money.â
Another pause.
Longer this time.
Then Michael said quietly:
âNathanâŠâ
âDonât ask questions you donât want answers to.â
Nathanâs grip tightened around the phone.
âAre you threatening me?â
âNo.â
Michael lowered his voice.
âIâm warning you.â
âAbout what?â
âThe truth.â
Nathan looked toward the hallway.
Where Lily and Noah were playing.
Then Michael said the words that changed everything.
May you like
âYour wife wasnât the only person who was keeping secrets.â
