Chapter 3 - THE MONEY THAT DISAPPEARED

Nathan spent the next three days digging.
He stopped trusting explanations.
He stopped accepting answers.
Because every time he pulled one thread, another secret appeared.
The first discovery was the money.
Nearly three million dollars.
Gone.
Emilyâs life insurance.
Their family savings.
Investments she had built for the children.
All moved through accounts Nathan didnât recognize.
And every transaction had one name connected to it.
Claire.
Nathan stared at the bank records.
âNoâŠâ
His hands trembled.
Claire had always told him she had no idea about the finances.
She said Emilyâs death left nothing.
She said Nathan was lucky to keep the house.
She said they had to start over.
But they werenât starting over.
Someone had been taking everything.
That night, Nathan waited.
Claire came home late.
Again.
âYouâre working a lot lately.â
She removed her coat.
âYou know how stressful my job is.â
Nathan placed the documents on the table.
âThen explain this.â
Claire stopped.
Her face changed.
âWhat did you do?â
Nathanâs eyes narrowed.
âWhat did I do?â
âYou went through my things.â
âNo.â
He pointed at the papers.
âI looked through the truth.â
Claire stepped back.
âNathanâŠâ
âThree million dollars.â
She said nothing.
âWhere did it go?â
Her silence answered him.
âI trusted you.â
Claireâs eyes filled with tears.
âYou donât understand.â
âEveryone keeps saying that.â
Nathanâs voice cracked.
âBut nobody explains anything.â
Claire whispered:
âI loved you.â
Nathan shook his head.
âLove doesnât look like this.â
At that moment, Lily appeared at the bottom of the stairs.
âDad?â
Nathan turned.
His daughter was holding something.
An old necklace.
Emilyâs necklace.
The one Nathan thought was buried with her.
âWhere did you get that?â
Lily looked at Claire.
âShe gave it to me.â
Nathan slowly looked back.
âClaire?â
Claire went completely still.
Lily continued.
âShe told Mommy she would take care of us.â
Nathanâs heart stopped.
âLilyâŠâ
The little girl started crying.
âShe was with Mommy before the crash.â
Nathan looked at Claire.
âTell me sheâs wrong.â
Claire couldnât.
She couldnât say anything.
Then Nathan heard something outside.
A car door.
He walked to the window.
A black SUV was parked across the street.
Someone was sitting inside.
Watching the house.
Nathan turned back.
And Claire whispered the sentence he would never forget.
âThey know youâre looking.â
The lights suddenly went out.
The entire house went dark.
May you like
And somewhere outsideâŠ
someone knocked on the front door.
