Chapter 5 - MY BROTHER’S SECOND FACE

Nathan couldn’t sleep.

Every memory he had of Michael suddenly looked different.

The nights they drank together.

The conversations after Emily’s funeral.

The advice.

The support.

Everything.

Was it real?

Or was it an act?

At seven in the morning, Nathan drove straight to Michael’s office.

He didn’t call.

He didn’t warn him.

He wanted to see his reaction.

The receptionist smiled.

“Mr. Carter, do you have an appointment?”

“No.”

“I’m afraid—”

“I’m his brother.”

The woman immediately stopped.

Something about her expression changed.

Like she already knew.

Michael’s office door opened.

“Nathan?”

Michael looked surprised.

But not scared.

That bothered Nathan.

“You look terrible.”

Nathan walked inside.

“I found the accounts.”

Michael’s smile disappeared.

“What accounts?”

“The money from Emily’s insurance.”

Silence.

Michael slowly closed the door.

“You should leave.”

Nathan laughed.

“Why?”

“Because you don’t understand what you’re getting into.”

Nathan stepped closer.

“No.”

His voice hardened.

“I understand now.”

Michael stared at him.

“You think Claire told you everything?”

Nathan paused.

“What does that mean?”

Michael walked toward the window.

“You always were emotional, Nathan.”

“Answer me.”

Michael sighed.

“Your wife was never as innocent as you think.”

Nathan’s jaw tightened.

“Don’t talk about Emily.”

“I’m talking about the truth.”

“You stole from her.”

Michael turned around.

“No.”

He looked Nathan directly in the eyes.

“She was stealing from us.”

Nathan froze.

“What?”

Michael opened a drawer.

He pulled out a document.

“She was planning to leave.”

Nathan stared.

“That’s impossible.”

“Is it?”

Michael placed the document on the desk.

A divorce agreement.

Unsigned.

Nathan’s hands went cold.

“Where did you get this?”

“From her office.”

“Why?”

Michael smiled sadly.

“Because Emily knew something.”

“What?”

“That you were being lied to.”

Nathan looked confused.

Michael continued.

“She found out Claire wasn’t who she claimed to be.”

Nathan felt his stomach drop.

“Then why didn’t she tell me?”

Michael looked away.

“Because she died before she could.”

The room became silent.

Nathan grabbed the paper.

“Where is the original?”

Michael didn’t answer.

“Nathan
”

“What?”

Michael’s voice became serious.

“Stop digging.”

Nathan stared at him.

“Or what?”

Michael looked at him.

“Or your children won’t be the only ones who get hurt.”

Nathan left the office with one thought.

Michael was hiding something.

But so was Claire.

And somewhere between them was the truth about Emily’s death.

That evening, Nathan returned home.

But before he reached the front door

He saw Lily standing outside.

Holding a small box.

“Dad.”

She looked terrified.

“I found this under Mommy’s old floorboard.”

Nathan opened the box.

Inside was a phone.

An old phone.

Emily’s phone.

And when Nathan turned it on

One unread video appeared.

Recorded the night she died.
