Chapter 2 - THE FIRST LIE

Dr. Holloway was waiting when Victor’s convoy reached the private hospital entrance.
Nurses rushed Ethan into an examination room.
Victor followed until the doctor stopped him.
“I need space.”
Victor’s jaw tightened.
“That is my son.”
“And I intend to help him.”
“Wait outside.”
The door closed.
Victor stood motionless in the hallway.
Lily sat several chairs away.
She was pale.
Her hands would not stop shaking.
Victor looked at her.
“What happened?”
Lily lifted her eyes.
Before she could answer, Serena hurried around the corner.
Her hair had been loosened.
Her makeup was smeared.
She looked like a frightened woman who had rushed to protect a child.
“Victor.”
She threw her arms around him.
He did not return the embrace.
Serena quickly stepped back.
“I’m so sorry.”
“I turned around for one second.”
“He tried to climb onto the table.”
“He slipped before I could catch him.”
Lily stared at her in disbelief.
Serena continued before anyone could interrupt.
“When Lily saw him fall, she panicked.”
“She attacked me.”
“I had to push her away.”
Victor looked at Lily.
“Is that true?”
Serena’s eyes locked onto hers.
There was a promise inside them.
A threat.
Lily swallowed.
“No.”
Serena’s expression did not change.
Lily slowly stood.
“She dragged Ethan across the floor.”
“She threatened me when I tried to stop her.”
“She said nobody would believe me.”
The hallway became completely silent.
Serena laughed once.
It sounded forced.
“She is confused.”
“She hit her head.”
Lily shook her head.
“I know exactly what I saw.”
Victor stepped closer to her.
“Why would Serena hurt him?”
Lily hesitated.
Because she knew the next sentence could change everything.
“She said Ethan was ruining her future.”
Victor’s face hardened.
Serena stepped between them.
“That is a lie.”
The examination-room door opened.
Dr. Holloway walked out.
Victor immediately turned toward him.
The doctor removed his glasses.
“Ethan’s condition is stable.”
Victor exhaled for the first time.
“But his injury was not caused by a simple fall.”
Serena went still.
Dr. Holloway looked directly at Victor.
“Someone pulled his arm with considerable force.”
Victor slowly turned toward his fiancée.
Serena’s face had gone white.
Then Victor’s phone rang.
His head of security was calling from the mansion.
“Boss.”

“We have a problem.”
“The nursery camera is gone.”
