Chapter 15 - THE FINAL TESTIMONY

Pier Nineteen was covered in fog.
Victor arrived before dawn.
Lily remained hidden inside Marcus’s vehicle several hundred feet away.
Federal agents surrounded the area.
No one moved without Victor’s signal.
Jonathan Crane stood near the edge of the pier.
Evelyn was tied to a chair beside him.
Crane held a gun in one hand.
His other hand trembled.
Victor approached alone.
“Where is Serena?”
Crane looked over his shoulder.
“She betrayed all of us.”
“She planned Ethan’s kidnapping before Evelyn knew.”
“She wanted you dead.”
“She wanted Evelyn blamed.”
Evelyn glared at him.
“You pathetic coward.”
Crane pushed the weapon against her shoulder.
“Be quiet.”
Victor held up the digital drive.
“You killed Thomas Ross.”
Crane’s face tightened.
“He forced me.”
“My father forced you?”
“Your father gave the order.”
“Evelyn watched.”
Victor looked at his mother.
She did not deny it.
Crane continued.
“I did everything for this family.”
“And when Anthony died, Evelyn treated me like a servant.”
“So Serena offered you a future.”
Lily’s voice came through Victor’s hidden earpiece.
“Keep him talking.”
Crane stepped forward.
“Give me the drive.”
Victor tossed it onto the wet concrete between them.
Crane bent to retrieve it.
Evelyn suddenly kicked the back of his knee.
The gun fired into the air.
Victor rushed forward.
Crane fell near the edge of the pier.
Lily ran from cover.
Crane saw her.
For one second, he looked at the daughter of the man he had killed.
“I am sorry.”
Lily stopped several feet away.
“No.”
“You are afraid.”
“That is not the same thing.”
Crane reached for the gun.
Federal agents surrounded him.
He slowly raised his hands.
Evelyn was arrested moments later.
She looked at Victor as officers led her away.
“You are destroying your father’s legacy.”
Victor held Ethan’s small blanket in one hand.
“No.”
“I am ending it.”
Serena was captured three hours later at a private airfield.
She had false documents, cash and a ticket to Switzerland.
At trial, she claimed Lily had invented everything.
She claimed Victor manipulated the evidence.
She claimed Evelyn had controlled her.
Then Lily took the witness stand.
She spoke about Ethan.
She spoke about the sedatives.
She spoke about Rosa.
She spoke about the forged documents.
She spoke about her father.
The courtroom remained silent as the recordings were played.
Serena’s calm expression finally cracked.
Crane testified in exchange for protection.
Rosa testified.
Mercer’s own body camera exposed the conspiracy.
Evelyn was convicted of racketeering, conspiracy and obstruction.
Crane was convicted for Thomas Ross’s murder and the kidnapping plot.
Mercer lost his badge and received a lengthy prison sentence.
Serena was convicted on every major charge brought against her.
Months later, Blackwood Mansion looked different.
The dark curtains had been removed.
The locked rooms were opened.
Victor dissolved the criminal parts of his father’s empire.
He created a protected trust for Ethan that no spouse or relative could control.
Rosa received medical care and a new home.
Lily visited her father’s grave for the first time without fear.
She placed a copy of the final court judgment beside his name.
“You were right.”
“They did not bury the truth forever.”
A small voice came from behind her.
“Li-li.”
She turned.
Ethan stood beside Victor, holding his father’s hand.
His arm had healed.
He took several uncertain steps toward her.
Lily knelt.
Ethan wrapped his arms around her neck.
Victor watched them silently.
“I owe you my son’s life,” he said.
Lily shook her head.
“You listened when it mattered.”
Victor looked toward Thomas Ross’s grave.
“Your father saved Ethan too.”
Lily wiped her eyes.
For the first time in years, she felt the weight of fear leaving her.
Victor reached into his coat.
He removed a small folder.
“What is that?” Lily asked.
“Your real employment contract.”
She raised an eyebrow.
“I already had one.”
“That belonged to Lily Parker.”
“This one belongs to Lillian Ross.”
She opened it.
The title on the first page made her pause.
Director of Child Protection and Household Security.
Lily looked at him.
“Is this your way of asking me to stay?”
Victor glanced at Ethan.
Ethan held tightly to Lily’s hand.
“No.”
“He is asking.”
Lily smiled through her tears.
Behind them, sunlight broke through the clouds.
The Blackwood name would never be clean.
Too much blood had been spilled beneath it.
Too many people had been silenced.
But the secrets were no longer hidden.
May you like
The criminals were no longer protected.
And the helpless nanny Serena had threatened to erase had become the witness who destroyed an empire.
