Chapter 1 - THE CRUMBLING EMPIRE

The heavy silence inside the grand ballroom was far more painful than the slap itself.
Every single camera flash had frozen in time.
The high-society guests stared with open mouths.
Isabella felt as though the oxygen had been completely sucked out of the room.
Her hand was still burning from the physical impact.
Yet her mind was paralyzed by the single word that echoed endlessly in her head.
"Sister."
The matriarch, Victoria Vance, took a violent step back.
Her expensive diamond necklace caught the glitter of the chandeliers.
Her eyes were fixed on the silver pocket watch.
Her manicured hands trembled so severely that her glass of vintage wine shattered on the marble floor.
"Get her out of here!" Victoria suddenly shrieked.
Her voice lacked its usual icy authority.
It was replaced by raw, unadulterated panic.
"Security! Take this crazy girl out!"
Two large men in black suits surged forward from the edges of the room.
Before they could touch the waitress, a powerful voice cut through the air.
"Touch her, and I will tear this family apart in court tomorrow morning."
The guests gasped in unison.
Julian Vance, the eldest brother and heir to the Vance enterprise, stepped into the light.
He was looking directly at the waitress's bloody cheek.
Then his eyes traveled down to the folded legal document in her hand.
"Julian, stay out of this!" Victoria snapped, her knuckles turning white.
"She is an intruder! She is trying to ruin your sister's night!"
The waitress did not flinch as the security guards hesitated.
She wiped the thin trickle of blood from her cheek with the back of her apron.
Her calm demeanor was terrifying.
"My name is not 'intruder', Victoria," she said softly.
"My name is Seraphina."
Isabella took a shaky step backward, her designer gown rustling loudly against the floor.
"Seraphina..." Isabella whispered.
The name hit Victoria like a physical blow.
Isabella looked at the silver pocket watch held in Seraphina's hand.
The identical twins in the photo stared right back at her.
"Mother..." Isabella turned to Victoria, her eyes filled with confusion and terror.
"Is this true?"
"Is she telling the truth?"
Victoria's face was completely devoid of color.
"She is a liar, Isabella! She's after our money!"
Seraphina let out a small, bitter laugh.
"I don't want your money, Victoria."
"I want the life you erased."
Seraphina unfolded the legal document with deliberate slowness.
"This is the original birth registration from Saint Jude’s Hospital, dated twenty-five years ago."
"It lists two living female infants born to Victoria Vance."
"And right beside it is the fake death certificate signed by your family doctor."
The crowd erupted into a flurry of frantic whispers.
"Is that real?" someone whispered in the third row.
"Did Victoria Vance really abandon her own child?"
"Look at their faces... they look exact!"
Victoria lunged forward to snatch the paper.
Julian stepped between his mother and Seraphina.
"Mother, stop!" Julian ordered, his tone dark and cold.
He turned to look at Seraphina.
His eyes swept over her cheap waitress uniform and the red mark on her face.
"If you are who you claim to be..." Julian began.
"Why reveal this here?"
"Why wait twenty-five years?"
Seraphina smiled, but her eyes remained cold as ice.
"Because today is our birthday, Julian."
"And I wanted to give our dear Isabella a gift she would never forget."
Isabella felt a surge of rage mix with her overwhelming shock.
She stepped toward Seraphina, her posture stiffening.
"You think you can just walk in here with a photo and a piece of paper and claim my life?"
"You are nothing!" Isabella hissed.
Seraphina didn't retreat.
She leaned in close to Isabella, her voice dropping to a dangerous whisper.
"I am not claiming your life, Isabella."
May you like
"I am coming to take back what you stole."
"Starting tonight."
