Chapter 6 - THE SECRET SHE HID FOR EIGHT YEARS

The patio went silent after the phone call ended.
Not the normal kind of silence.
This was the kind of silence that came before something broke.
Daniel Cross stood there holding his phone, staring at nothing.
“Ask your maid what she was holding when your brother died.”
The words repeated inside his head.
Again.
And again.
He slowly looked at Amelia.
She didn’t need to hear the question.
She already knew.
Everyone was watching her.
Waiting.
Judging.
Just like eight years ago.
Daniel took a step forward.
“Amelia.”
She didn’t answer.
His voice became harder.
“What was he talking about?”
Amelia looked down.
Her fingers tightened.
For years, she had imagined this moment.
The moment someone finally asked.
The moment she would have to tell the truth.
But she never imagined standing beside a pool, surrounded by strangers, with a man who once trusted her now looking at her like a suspect.
“I was holding something.”
Daniel’s eyes narrowed.
“What?”
Amelia looked at him.
“A flash drive.”
The crowd became restless.
Vanessa smiled.
A small smile.
A victorious smile.
“Of course.”
Everyone looked at her.
Vanessa shook her head.
“This is exactly what I told you. She was hiding something.”
Amelia turned toward her.
“You don’t know what happened.”
Vanessa laughed.
“I know enough.”
“No.”
Amelia’s voice became stronger.
“You know the version you created.”
Daniel looked between them.
“Enough.”
His voice stopped the argument.
He looked at Amelia.
“Start from the beginning.”
Amelia hesitated.
Then she closed her eyes.
And returned to the night that destroyed her life.
Eight years earlier.
The storm was violent.
Rain covered the road.
Amelia remembered driving through the darkness, gripping the steering wheel with one hand and holding a small black flash drive in the other.
Michael Cross had given it to her hours before.
His face had looked different that night.
Not like the confident businessman everyone knew.
He looked scared.
“Amelia,” he had said.
She remembered his voice.
“If anything happens to me, don’t give this to Daniel.”
She had frowned.
“Why not?”
Michael looked around before answering.
“Because I don’t know who I can trust anymore.”
Those words had terrified her.
Michael Cross was not a man who scared easily.
“What’s on it?”
He didn’t answer.
Instead, he placed the drive in her hand.
“Proof.”
“Proof of what?”
Michael looked at her.
“Proof that someone has been stealing from Cross Industries.”
Amelia remembered laughing.
Not because it was funny.
Because it sounded impossible.
“Your own company?”
Michael nodded.
“And someone close to me is involved.”
The memory faded.
Back on the patio, Amelia opened her eyes.
Daniel was staring at her.
“Michael gave you that drive?”
“Yes.”
“Why you?”
Amelia looked away.
“Because he trusted me.”
Daniel’s expression changed.
There was something painful in his eyes.
Something he didn’t want to admit.
“My brother trusted you.”
“Yes.”
“More than he trusted me?”
Amelia didn’t answer.
But the silence said enough.
Daniel looked hurt.
Vanessa stepped forward.
“This is ridiculous.”
Daniel turned.
“Not now.”
“No, Daniel. You need to hear this.”
She pointed at Amelia.
“She had the evidence. She was the last person seen with Michael. She disappeared afterward. And now she suddenly appears in your house?”
Vanessa looked around.
“Does nobody see what’s happening?”
The guests started whispering again.
Amelia felt the old pain return.
The same story.
The same judgment.
Nobody cared about what happened.
They only cared about what looked believable.
Daniel looked at her.
“Did you take the flash drive after the crash?”
Amelia stared at him.
The question hurt.
“Do you really think I killed him?”
“I didn’t say that.”
“But you’re thinking it.”
Daniel said nothing.
And that was her answer.
Amelia took a shaky breath.
“After the crash, I woke up in the hospital.”
She looked at everyone.
“My memory was broken. I didn’t remember everything.”
She touched her temple.
“But I remembered one thing.”
“What?”
“A person standing beside my car.”
Daniel leaned closer.
“Who?”
Amelia looked at Vanessa.
The entire patio froze.
Vanessa’s smile disappeared.
“It was her.”
Daniel turned slowly.
“Vanessa?”
Amelia nodded.
“She was there.”
“That’s impossible.”
“No.”
Amelia stepped closer.
“She was watching me die.”
Vanessa’s face hardened.
“You’re insane.”
Amelia ignored her.
“She took the flash drive.”
Daniel looked shocked.
“You saw her?”
“I saw her reach into my car.”
“Then why didn’t you tell anyone?”
Amelia’s eyes filled with pain.
“Because when I woke up…”
She paused.
“The police report said I was driving alone.”
Nobody spoke.
“The hospital records were changed.”
Daniel frowned.
“What?”
“My name disappeared.”
Amelia’s voice broke.
“My apartment was emptied.”
She looked at Vanessa.
“And the only person who knew I survived…”
was standing right in front of her.
Vanessa’s face became cold.
“You should have died that night.”
The words came out before she could stop them.
Everyone heard.
Daniel heard.
And his expression changed instantly.
Because innocent people didn’t say things like that.
“Vanessa…”
She realized her mistake.
“I didn’t mean—”
“You just admitted you knew she survived.”
Vanessa stepped back.
“No, I—”
Daniel’s voice became dangerous.
“How did you know?”
No answer.
For the first time all night…
Vanessa had nothing to say.
Then suddenly, the sound of a car engine came from outside the gate.
Everyone turned.
A black SUV stopped in front of the house.
The driver’s door opened.
A man stepped out.
Older.
Wearing a dark suit.
Daniel immediately recognized him.
His face turned pale.
Because the man walking toward them was someone who should never have been alive.
The man looked directly at Daniel.
Then at Amelia.
And said:
“I’m sorry it took me eight years to come back.”
Daniel couldn’t move.
“Michael?”
The man nodded.
“Yes.”
The patio erupted.
Vanessa stepped backward.
For the first time…
she looked truly terrified.
Michael Cross walked closer.
And his next words destroyed the entire story everyone believed.
“Daniel, your brother didn’t die that night.”
He looked at Amelia.
“She saved my life.”
A pause.
Then he looked at Vanessa.
May you like
“But she couldn’t save herself.”
