Chapter 14 - THE FATHER WHO CAME OUT OF THE SHADOWS

Daniel Cross stopped breathing.

“Someone who claims to be his real father.”

The guard’s words echoed through the warehouse.

Nobody moved.

Not Daniel.

Not Amelia.

Not Michael.

Not even Evelyn.

Because everyone understood the danger of those words.

Lucas was not just a child caught in a family war.

He was the center of it.

Daniel slowly turned toward the guard.

“Where is my son?”

The guard swallowed.

“Near the old loading area.”

“Who is with him?”

The guard hesitated.

“A man.”

Daniel’s eyes narrowed.

“Name.”

The guard looked uncomfortable.

“He said you would know.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“Tell me.”

The guard lowered his voice.

“His name is Victor Hale.”

The reaction was immediate.

Michael’s face changed.

Amelia froze.

Even Evelyn looked surprised.

Daniel noticed.

“You know him.”

Nobody answered.

“Michael.”

His brother looked away.

“Michael.”

A long silence.

Then Michael finally spoke.

“Victor Hale was your father’s lawyer.”

Daniel frowned.

“What?”

“He worked for Cross Industries twenty years ago.”

Daniel looked confused.

“Then why would he claim Lucas is his son?”

Michael’s expression became darker.

“Because Victor was never just your father’s lawyer.”

A pause.

“He was the person who helped hide everything.”

Daniel felt anger rising.

“Everything?”

Michael nodded.

“The money.”

“The records.”

“The people who disappeared.”

Michael looked at Evelyn.

“And the children.”

Amelia’s heart sank.

“Children?”

Michael looked at her.

“I’m sorry.”

She shook her head.

“No.”

Her voice trembled.

“No more secrets.”

She stepped closer.

“Tell me everything.”

Michael looked at Daniel.

Then at Amelia.

Then finally said:

“Eight years ago, Evelyn wasn’t trying to kill you.”

Amelia stared.

“Then what was she trying to do?”

Michael answered quietly.

“She was trying to take Lucas.”

The words hurt more than Amelia expected.

She touched her chest.

“My baby…”

Michael nodded.

“Your daughter was never the only thing Evelyn wanted.”

Daniel looked confused.

“Wait.”

He turned toward Michael.

“You said daughter earlier.”

Michael looked down.

He realized his mistake.

Daniel’s expression changed.

“What daughter?”

The silence was instant.

Amelia closed her eyes.

Because another secret had just escaped.

Evelyn smiled.

“This family is built on lies.”

Daniel looked between them.

“Someone explain.”

Amelia looked at Daniel.

“I had a daughter.”

His face changed.

“What?”

“Before the accident.”

Her voice became soft.

“She was taken from me.”

Daniel stared.

“And Lucas?”

Michael nodded.

“Lucas and Amelia’s daughter were both connected to that night.”

Daniel felt like the ground was disappearing beneath him.

Two children.

Two lives.

Two secrets.

All hidden from him.

“Where is Amelia’s daughter?”

Nobody answered.

Then Evelyn spoke.

“She’s alive.”

Everyone turned.

Amelia’s eyes filled with tears.

“Where?”

Evelyn smiled.

“That depends.”

Daniel stepped toward her.

“Enough.”

For the first time, Evelyn looked at her son differently.

Not like a mother.

Like an enemy.

“You still think you are in control.”

Daniel’s voice was cold.

“You kidnapped my son.”

“I protected him.”

“You stole him.”

“I saved him from the truth.”

Daniel laughed.

“The truth?”

He pointed around the room.

“You destroyed everyone’s lives because of some truth?”

Evelyn looked at him.

“You have no idea what your father did.”

Daniel froze.

“My father?”

“Yes.”

Evelyn stepped closer.

“He was not the innocent man you remember.”

Michael immediately interrupted.

“Don’t listen to her.”

Evelyn looked at him.

“You know I’m right.”

Michael said nothing.

Daniel noticed.

Again.

Everyone knew something except him.

“What did my father do?”

Nobody answered.

Then a voice came from outside.

A man.

Calm.

Confident.

“You want to know what your father did?”

Everyone turned.

Victor Hale stepped into the loading area.

Beside him was Lucas.

The little boy was holding his hand.

Daniel’s entire expression changed.

“Lucas.”

The child looked at him.

“Daddy.”

Daniel almost broke.

He moved forward.

But Victor stopped him.

“Not yet.”

Daniel’s eyes turned cold.

“You touch my son and you won’t walk out of here.”

Victor smiled.

“Still exactly like your father.”

Daniel looked at Lucas.

“Come here.”

Lucas looked confused.

He looked between Daniel and Victor.

Then slowly stepped forward.

But Victor held his shoulder.

“Careful.”

Daniel stopped.

“Let him go.”

Victor smiled.

“You don’t even know what you’re asking for.”

Daniel’s anger grew.

“He’s my son.”

Victor shook his head.

“No.”

The word was quiet.

But powerful.

“He is your responsibility.”

A pause.

“But he is not your blood.”

The room went silent.

Daniel stared.

“What?”

Victor looked at Amelia.

Then back at Daniel.

“Tell him.”

Nobody moved.

Daniel turned toward Amelia.

“Tell me what?”

Amelia’s face went pale.

Because she had never wanted this truth to come out this way.

Victor smiled.

“Lucas was born from a secret.”

Daniel’s voice became almost a whisper.

“Amelia?”

She looked at him.

Tears forming.

“I didn’t know.”

Daniel froze.

“What?”

“I didn’t know.”

Her voice broke.

“When I woke up, everyone told me my baby was gone.”

She looked at Lucas.

“I spent eight years believing I lost him.”

Daniel looked at Victor.

“Then why does he say he’s his father?”

Victor smiled.

“Because I was the one who raised him.”

Amelia stepped back.

“No.”

Victor continued.

“After the accident, Evelyn gave me the child.”

Daniel’s face changed.

“You raised my son?”

Victor nodded.

“And now I’m taking him back.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“You’re insane.”

Victor looked at him.

“No.”

His smile disappeared.

“I’m the only one telling the truth.”

Then he reached into his coat.

Everyone reacted.

But he didn’t pull out a weapon.

He pulled out a document.

An old birth certificate.

He threw it toward Daniel.

Daniel picked it up.

He read the name.

Then his hands began shaking.

Because the father listed on the document was not Daniel Cross.

Not Victor Hale.

Not anyone he expected.

The name belonged to someone who had been dead for eight years.

Michael Cross.

The warehouse went silent.

Daniel slowly looked at his brother.

“Michael…”

Michael’s face collapsed.

Because the final secret had finally been revealed.

Lucas was not just connected to Amelia.

He was connected to Michael.

And now Daniel had to face the truth:

The child he raised as his own…

May you like

was the child everyone had been fighting to hide.
