Chapter 1 - THE WOMAN WHO SAVED THE BABY

The first thing the Father saw was his son’s tiny hand disappearing beneath the water.
The second thing he saw was the Maid jumping into the pool after him.
And the third thing he heard would change her life forever.
“She pushed him!”
The scream cut through the patio like a knife.
Everyone froze.
The birthday music stopped. The guests turned around. The sound of laughter disappeared, replaced by the terrifying silence of people watching something they didn’t understand.
Mia Carter stood waist-deep in the pool, her hair stuck to her face, her white maid uniform completely soaked. Her arms were wrapped tightly around a baby who was coughing and crying against her shoulder.
“I saved him,” she whispered.
But nobody was listening.
Not anymore.
The little boy in her arms was still shaking from the cold, but he was alive.
That was all that should have mattered.
Except the woman in the green dress was already walking toward the Father.
Slowly.
Confidently.
Like she had been waiting for this exact moment.
“Daniel,” the woman said, grabbing his arm. “You need to believe me. I saw everything.”
Daniel Cross looked from the woman to his son.
His face was pale.
His hands were trembling.
“Where is my son?” he asked.
Mia immediately stepped forward.
“Sir, your baby is okay. I caught him before—”
“Stay away from him!”
The words hit harder than a slap.
Mia stopped.
Her lips parted.
For a second, she looked like she couldn’t believe what she had just heard.
“I’m sorry?” she said quietly.
The woman in green moved closer to Daniel.
Her name was Vanessa Reed.
She was one of the most important guests at the party.
And she knew exactly how to control a room.
“She was standing behind the stroller,” Vanessa said. “I saw her hands.”
Mia’s eyes widened.
“No.”
Her voice cracked.
“No, that’s not true.”
Vanessa looked at her with fake sadness.
“I know you’re scared, but lying will only make things worse.”
Mia stared at her.
“You’re lying.”
A few guests gasped.
Vanessa raised an eyebrow.
“Excuse me?”
“You know I didn’t push him.”
The patio became silent again.
Mia climbed out of the pool slowly. Water dripped from her clothes onto the expensive stone floor.
“I saw the stroller moving toward the edge,” she said. “I ran because nobody else was close enough.”
Daniel looked at his son.
The baby was crying harder now.
A part of him wanted to believe Mia.
But fear had already taken control.
“What happened?” Daniel asked.
Mia swallowed.
“The wheel got stuck on the edge of the pool. Someone bumped into it.”
Vanessa immediately interrupted.
“No one touched that stroller.”
Mia looked directly at her.
“Yes, someone did.”
Vanessa’s expression changed for half a second.
Just half a second.
But Mia noticed.
“You were behind him,” Mia said.
The guests started whispering.
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
“What is she talking about?”
Vanessa sighed.
“Daniel, don’t let her manipulate you. She’s trying to protect herself.”
Mia laughed softly.
Not because it was funny.
Because she was hurt.
“I protected your son.”
Her voice became louder.
“I jumped into a pool without thinking because your child was drowning.”
Nobody spoke.
Mia looked around at everyone.
“At least ask your son who saved him.”
Daniel looked down.
The baby was still crying, but his small fingers were holding onto the fabric of Mia’s wet uniform.
For a moment, Daniel saw it.
His son trusted her.
But before he could say anything, Vanessa stepped closer.
“She could have caused this on purpose.”
Daniel’s face hardened.
“What?”
Vanessa lowered her voice.
“Think about it. She works here. She knows the house. She knows the security system. She knows where everything is.”
Mia stared at her in disbelief.
“You’re accusing me because I’m the maid?”
“No,” Vanessa replied.
Then she smiled.
“I’m accusing you because you almost killed a child.”
The words exploded across the patio.
Mia felt every eye turn against her.
She had spent three years working for the Cross family.
She cleaned their home.
Cooked their meals.
Took care of their son when they were too busy.
She had never even raised her voice at anyone.
And now, in less than five minutes, she had become a criminal.
Daniel looked at her.
His expression was cold.
“Did you touch the stroller?”
Mia looked at him.
The man she had worked for.
The man whose son she had just saved.
“No.”
A pause.
“I swear.”
Daniel said nothing.
Then he reached inside his jacket.
Mia’s heart dropped.
Everyone watched as he pulled something out.
Not a phone.
Not a wallet.
A pair of handcuffs.
The entire patio went silent.
Vanessa smiled.
Mia stepped back.
“Sir…”
Daniel walked toward her.
“I need you to come with me.”
Her eyes filled with disbelief.
“You think I did this?”
Daniel stopped.
For a moment, something in his face changed.
Something like doubt.
Then Vanessa whispered behind him.
“Don’t make the mistake of trusting her.”
Daniel tightened his grip on the handcuffs.
Mia looked at the baby one last time.
The little boy reached his hand toward her.
“Mommy…”
Everyone froze.
The baby had spoken.
Not clearly.
Not perfectly.
But everyone heard it.
Mommy.
Mia wasn’t his mother.
So why did the child call her that?
And why did Vanessa’s face suddenly turn completely white?
Before anyone could react, Daniel’s phone rang.
He answered.
A voice on the other end said four words that changed everything.
“Sir, check the cameras.”
Daniel looked toward the security room.
Then he looked back at Vanessa.
For the first time that night…
he looked afraid.
May you like
Because the truth he was about to see would destroy everything.
