Chapter 2 - THE CAMERA THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

For five seconds, nobody moved.

The patio that had been full of accusations, anger, and whispers suddenly became completely silent.

Daniel Cross stood frozen with the phone pressed against his ear.

“Sir,” the security manager repeated. “You need to see the footage immediately.”

Daniel’s eyes slowly moved toward the security room.

Then back to Vanessa.

The woman in the green dress who had been so confident moments ago was now standing perfectly still.

Too still.

Mia noticed.

And so did Daniel.

“Why do you look nervous?” Daniel asked.

Vanessa quickly forced a small laugh.

“Nervous? Daniel, your son almost died. I’m upset because I’m trying to help you.”

But her voice was different now.

The confidence was gone.

Daniel lowered his phone.

“Everyone stays here.”

His eyes moved to the security guard near the door.

“No one leaves.”

Vanessa’s face tightened.

“Daniel, you don’t seriously believe her, do you?”

He didn’t answer.

That silence scared her more than anything.

Mia stood near the pool, still soaked and shivering.

She wrapped her arms around herself.

She wasn’t afraid of the cameras.

She was afraid because she knew something worse had already happened.

Someone wanted her to look guilty.

And whoever planned this was very close.

Daniel walked toward the security room.

Mia watched him disappear through the door.

For the first time since she jumped into the pool, she allowed herself to breathe.

A few guests avoided looking at her.

Others stared with suspicion.

One older woman whispered loudly enough for everyone to hear.

“Poor family. Imagine having someone like that working inside your home.”

Mia heard it.

She lowered her eyes.

Those words hurt more than the cold water.

Because she knew the truth.

She had saved a life.

But everyone was treating her like she had tried to take one.

Inside the security room, Daniel stood in front of the monitors.

The security manager, Mr. Harris, pulled up the footage.

“Camera three covers the patio,” he said.

Daniel leaned forward.

“Play it.”

The video began.

At first, everything looked normal.

Guests laughing.

Children running around.

The stroller sitting beside the pool.

Then Daniel saw Mia.

She was carrying a tray of drinks.

She wasn’t near the baby.

She wasn’t near the stroller.

“She wasn’t even there,” Daniel whispered.

Mr. Harris nodded.

“Keep watching.”

The footage continued.

Then Vanessa appeared.

Walking toward the stroller.

Daniel’s face changed.

“No…”

Vanessa looked around.

Checking.

Making sure nobody was watching.

Then she reached out.

Daniel stepped closer to the screen.

His heart started beating faster.

“What is she doing?”

The security manager paused the video.

“Look carefully.”

The image froze.

Vanessa’s hand was on the stroller.

Not touching it gently.

Pushing it.

Daniel felt the blood leave his face.

For several seconds, he couldn’t speak.

The woman who claimed she saw Mia push the stroller…

was the one who moved it.

“Zoom in.”

The screen became clearer.

Vanessa looked directly toward the patio entrance.

She wasn’t surprised.

She wasn’t scared.

She was waiting.

Waiting for someone to notice.

Waiting for the perfect person to blame.

Daniel stepped back.

His hand tightened into a fist.

“Why?”

Mr. Harris looked uncomfortable.

“I don’t know, sir.”

Daniel stared at the screen.

Then another detail appeared.

A detail nobody had noticed.

Right before Vanessa pushed the stroller…

someone else walked behind her.

Someone wearing a black jacket.

Someone who quickly disappeared from the camera view.

Daniel’s eyes narrowed.

“Who is that?”

Mr. Harris shook his head.

“That camera angle doesn’t show the face.”

Daniel stared at the unknown person.

The situation was suddenly much bigger than a simple accusation.

Someone had tried to hurt his son.

And Vanessa might not have been working alone.

Meanwhile, outside, Vanessa was losing control.

She walked toward Mia.

“You should leave before Daniel comes back.”

Mia looked at her.

“You’re scared.”

Vanessa smiled coldly.

“You have no idea who you’re dealing with.”

Mia stepped closer.

“No. I think I finally do.”

Vanessa’s expression hardened.

“You’re just a maid.”

Those words hit a nerve.

Mia had spent years hearing people underestimate her.

But Vanessa didn’t know something.

She didn’t know where Mia came from.

She didn’t know what Mia had survived.

And she definitely didn’t know the secret Mia had been hiding from everyone in that house.

Mia looked her straight in the eyes.

“You made one mistake.”

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“And what’s that?”

“You thought nobody saw you.”

For the first time, Vanessa looked afraid.

Then Daniel walked back onto the patio.

Everyone turned.

His face was completely different.

Cold.

Serious.

Angry.

He walked past Vanessa without looking at her.

He stopped in front of Mia.

The handcuffs were still in his hand.

Mia looked down at them.

A painful smile appeared on her face.

“So?”

Daniel looked at her.

“I owe you an apology.”

The guests gasped.

Vanessa immediately stepped forward.

“Daniel, don’t do this.”

He turned toward her.

And the look in his eyes made her step back.

“Security footage shows you pushed the stroller.”

The entire patio erupted.

“What?”

“No way.”

“She lied?”

Vanessa’s face turned pale.

“That’s impossible.”

Daniel took another step toward her.

“Why did you do it?”

Vanessa said nothing.

Then she laughed.

A quiet, terrifying laugh.

“You really think a video changes everything?”

Daniel frowned.

“What does that mean?”

Vanessa looked at Mia.

Then at the baby.

Then back at Daniel.

“You have no idea who that woman really is.”

Mia’s heart stopped.

Everyone looked at her.

Daniel’s expression changed.

“What are you talking about?”

Vanessa smiled.

A smile full of revenge.

“Ask her why she came to work in this house.”

Mia’s face went pale.

Because Vanessa had just revealed the one thing Mia had promised herself she would never tell anyone.

Daniel looked between them.

“Who are you, Mia?”

The question hung in the air.

And for the first time that night…

Mia realized saving the baby was only the beginning.

May you like

Because now her own secret was about to destroy her.
