Chapter 12 - THE CHILD WHO CONNECTED THEM ALL

Daniel Cross read the message again.

Then again.

His fingers tightened around the phone.

YOU WANT YOUR SON BACK? COME ALONE.

The words were simple.

But the threat behind them was clear.

Someone had his son.

Someone had Amelia.

And someone wanted him to walk straight into a trap.

“Absolutely not.”

The voice behind him made Daniel turn.

Michael stood in the doorway.

Pale.

Weak.

But alive.

“You’re supposed to be in the hospital.”

Michael ignored that.

“You’re not going there alone.”

Daniel looked at him.

“You were shot.”

“And you’re about to make the same mistake I made eight years ago.”

Daniel frowned.

“What mistake?”

Michael stepped into the office.

“Thinking you can handle everything by yourself.”

Daniel looked away.

His entire life had been built on control.

His company.

His family.

His reputation.

But tonight, every piece of that control had disappeared.

“My son is out there.”

Michael nodded.

“I know.”

“Amelia is out there.”

“I know.”

Daniel looked at him.

“Then you understand why I have to go.”

Michael stayed silent for a moment.

Then he reached into his jacket.

And placed a small object on the desk.

A key.

Daniel looked at it.

“What is that?”

“The key to the old Cross factory.”

Daniel’s expression changed.

“The place where your father died.”

Michael nodded.

“The place where this all started.”

A cold feeling moved through Daniel.

“Why do you have this?”

Michael looked away.

“Because I was there that night.”

Daniel froze.

“What?”

Michael took a deep breath.

“I didn’t tell you everything.”

Daniel’s eyes hardened.

“Of course you didn’t.”

Michael accepted the anger.

“I was nineteen. I thought I knew everything.”

He looked at the key.

“Then I saw what my father discovered.”

Daniel stepped closer.

“What did he discover?”

Michael looked at him.

“The company wasn’t being stolen by strangers.”

A pause.

“It was being stolen by someone inside our family.”

Daniel already knew the answer.

But he didn’t want to say it.

“Evelyn.”

Michael nodded.

“Yes.”

Daniel shook his head.

“My mother?”

Michael looked at him sadly.

“She wasn’t the woman you thought she was.”

Meanwhile…

Amelia sat on the cold floor of the abandoned building.

Her mind was spinning.

“My daughter…”

The words felt unreal.

She looked at Ethan.

“You knew?”

Ethan didn’t answer.

That was enough.

“You knew I had a child.”

“Yes.”

“And you let me believe she was dead?”

Ethan looked broken.

“I thought it was the only way to protect her.”

Amelia laughed.

A painful laugh.

“Protect her?”

She looked around the empty room.

“You kidnapped me.”

“I had no choice.”

“Everyone always says that.”

Her voice became sharper.

“Everyone who destroys someone’s life always says they had no choice.”

Ethan looked down.

Because he knew she was right.

Rachel stood quietly nearby.

Watching the two people she cared about destroy each other.

Then Amelia looked at her.

“Rachel.”

Her sister looked up.

“You knew.”

Rachel nodded.

“I found out years ago.”

“And you never told me?”

Rachel’s eyes filled with tears.

“You weren’t ready.”

Amelia shook her head.

“No.”

Her voice cracked.

“You were protecting yourself.”

Rachel flinched.

Because that hurt.

But it was true.

Amelia had lost eight years.

Eight years of memories.

Eight years with her child.

Eight years believing everyone she loved had abandoned her.

Suddenly, a sound came from outside.

Footsteps.

Everyone stopped.

Ethan immediately stood.

“Someone’s coming.”

Rachel looked nervous.

“Who?”

Ethan didn’t answer.

Because he already knew.

The door opened.

A woman walked in.

Older.

Elegant.

Calm.

Amelia’s breathing stopped.

She recognized her immediately.

Even after eight years.

Even after all the lies.

Evelyn Cross.

Daniel’s mother.

The woman everyone thought was dead.

Amelia stared.

“You…”

Evelyn smiled.

“You finally remember me.”

Rachel stepped back.

“No.”

Evelyn looked at her.

“You were always the emotional one.”

Amelia stood slowly.

“You took my daughter.”

Evelyn didn’t deny it.

“Yes.”

The honesty shocked Amelia.

“Why?”

Evelyn walked closer.

“Because she was valuable.”

Amelia’s eyes filled with anger.

“She’s a child.”

“No.”

Evelyn smiled.

“She’s evidence.”

“Evidence of what?”

Evelyn looked at her.

“The truth about the Cross family.”

Amelia shook her head.

“You ruined my life for money?”

Evelyn laughed.

“Money?”

She looked almost offended.

“You still don’t understand.”

She stepped closer.

“The Cross family was built on secrets.”

A pause.

“And your daughter is the secret I could never erase.”

Amelia felt cold.

“Why?”

Evelyn looked at her.

“Because she proves Daniel is not who he thinks he is.”

Amelia froze.

“What does that mean?”

Evelyn smiled.

“Ask him yourself.”

At that exact moment…

The warehouse doors opened.

Everyone turned.

Daniel Cross stood there.

Alone.

His eyes immediately found Amelia.

For a second, neither of them moved.

Then Daniel looked at Evelyn.

His face changed.

“Mother?”

Evelyn smiled.

“Hello, Daniel.”

Daniel’s hands tightened.

“You’re alive.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Evelyn looked around.

“At last, everyone is here.”

Her eyes moved from Daniel to Amelia.

Then to Ethan.

“This family has spent years hiding the truth.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“Where is my son?”

Evelyn smiled.

“Safe.”

“Bring him to me.”

“No.”

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“Then you’re making the biggest mistake of your life.”

Evelyn laughed softly.

“You still sound like your father.”

Daniel froze.

Because nobody talked about his father like that.

Evelyn continued:

“Strong.”

A pause.

“But blind.”

She turned toward Amelia.

“Tell him.”

Amelia looked confused.

“Tell him what?”

Evelyn smiled.

“The truth about the night you disappeared.”

Daniel looked at Amelia.

“What truth?”

Amelia’s face changed.

Because she remembered.

A piece of memory buried deep inside.

A memory she had never been able to explain.

The night of the accident.

The person who pulled her from the wreck.

The person who whispered:

“Forget everything.”

Her eyes widened.

“No…”

Daniel stepped closer.

“What is it?”

Amelia looked at him.

Tears forming.

“I know who erased my memory.”

Everyone went silent.

Evelyn smiled.

Because she knew the truth was finally coming out.

Amelia whispered the name.

And Daniel’s entire world collapsed.

“It was you.”

She looked directly at Daniel.

May you like

“You were there that night.”
