Chapter 8 - THE SECRET IN THE KEY

The key looked ordinary.

Small.

Brass.

Old.

But it was engraved with a symbol Arthur had not seen since childhood.

His father's initials.

A.S.

Arthur took Lily to the private laboratory beneath Sterling headquarters.

DNA tests were conducted.

The results shocked everyone.

Lily's genetic markers showed a direct connection to Arthur's family.

Emily stared at the report.

“She's related to you.”

Arthur nodded.

“But how?”

Samuel answered.

“Sarah had a child.”

Emily shook her head.

“Ethan.”

“No.”

Samuel looked at Lily.

“Lily.”

Emily stared at him.

The room went silent.

“You're saying Lily is Sarah's daughter?”

Samuel nodded.

Emily's knees weakened.

“But I raised her.”

“Yes.”

“Sarah gave her to me?”

“She knew Victor would never search for a child raised outside the Sterling family.”

Emily looked at Lily.

Her daughter had spent eight years believing she was ordinary.

Now everyone wanted her.

Arthur sat beside Lily.

“I'm sorry.”

Lily looked at him.

“Am I in trouble?”

Arthur shook his head.

“No.”

“Then why is everyone scared?”

Arthur struggled to answer.

“Because sometimes the truth makes dangerous people afraid.”

Lily thought for a moment.

“Then maybe we should tell everyone.”

Arthur smiled sadly.

“If only it were that simple.”

That night, Arthur called an emergency board meeting.

Victor's supporters demanded his resignation.

They accused him of mental instability.

They claimed he had abandoned the company.

They claimed the homeless man on the sidewalk was proof that Arthur was no longer capable of leadership.

Arthur walked into the boardroom.

Every director stared at him.

Victor sat at the head of the table.

Arthur stopped.

“That is my chair.”

Victor smiled.

“Not anymore.”

Arthur placed a folder on the table.

“You stole two hundred million dollars.”

Victor laughed.

“Prove it.”

Arthur opened the folder.

“I can.”

Victor's smile disappeared.

Arthur pressed a button.

The entire boardroom screen activated.

A recording appeared.

Victor was shown transferring money through shell companies.

The directors gasped.

Victor stood.

“This is fabricated.”

Then another video played.

Sarah appeared.

She looked younger.

Frightened.

But alive.

Victor slowly sat down.

Sarah said:

“Victor Hale killed my father.”

Arthur froze.

The boardroom went silent.

Sarah continued.

“And Arthur Sterling helped him.”

Arthur stared at the screen.

His own face appeared beside Victor.

The video ended.

Arthur whispered:

“That isn't possible.”

But the footage was real.

And for the first time, Arthur realized he might have been protecting the wrong person his entire life.
