Chapter 1 - THE MAN EVERYONE IGNORED

Everyone walked past the old man as if he were invisible.
He sat beneath the cold shadow of a closed storefront, his back pressed against a brick wall, his gray hair disheveled and his coat several sizes too large.
His shoes were cracked.
His hands trembled.
A paper cup rested beside him with only a few coins inside.
Cars passed.
People hurried by.
Some looked at him for half a second before turning away.
Others deliberately crossed the street.
Nobody stopped.
Nobody asked if he was hungry.
Nobody asked if he needed help.
Nobody even bothered to learn his name.
Then a little girl stopped.
She was eight years old.
Her name was Lily Carter.
She stood beside her mother, holding a warm paper bag from the burger restaurant across the street.
Her mother, Emily, was distracted by a phone call.
“Mommy, can I sit over there?”
Emily glanced toward the bench.
“Just stay where I can see you, sweetheart.”
Lily nodded.
Then she noticed the old man.
He was staring at the burger in her hands.
Not greedily.
Not aggressively.
Just quietly.
His eyes followed the steam escaping from the bag.
Lily looked at him.
Then she looked at her burger.
Then back at him.
She walked over.
The old man immediately lowered his eyes.
“Sir…”
He looked up.
His eyes were tired but surprisingly gentle.
“Are you hungry?”
The man smiled faintly.
“You should eat it, sweetheart.”
Lily frowned.
“I have another one at home.”
The old man shook his head.
“You don't have to give me anything.”
Lily opened the bag.
She pulled out the largest burger.
Then she placed it directly into his trembling hands.
“It's okay.”
The old man stared at the burger.
His lips parted.
For several seconds, he couldn't speak.
Then tears slowly filled his eyes.
“Why would you do that?”
Lily shrugged.
“Because you're hungry.”
The old man lowered his head.
One tear rolled down his cheek.
Lily smiled.
“You should eat before it gets cold.”
He looked at her as if she had given him something worth far more than food.
“Thank you.”
Lily turned toward her mother.
Then the sound of screeching tires shattered the moment.
A black luxury SUV stopped directly beside the sidewalk.
Four men in expensive suits jumped out.
They looked terrified.
One of them immediately ran toward the old man.
“Sir!”
The old man slowly stood.
The man's face changed with relief.
“We've been searching everywhere for you.”
Another man checked his watch.
“The board meeting starts in twenty minutes.”
The crowd began gathering.
Someone whispered.
“Who is that?”
The suited man looked at the old man with absolute respect.
“They can't begin without you, Mr. Sterling.”
Lily's eyes widened.
The homeless man wasn't homeless.
He was Arthur Sterling.
The billionaire chairman of Sterling Global.
The man who had disappeared three days earlier.
The old man glanced at Lily.
Then he reached inside his coat.
He pulled out a sealed white envelope.
He placed it in her hands.
“You gave me your lunch when everyone else walked away.”
Lily looked at the envelope.
“What's inside?”
Arthur smiled.
“Something I need you to open at home.”
Emily finally ended her phone call.
She rushed over.
“Lily!”
The suited men stepped aside.
Arthur looked directly at Emily.
“Take good care of her.”
Emily stared at him.
“I'm sorry?”
But before she could ask another question, Arthur entered the SUV.
The vehicle disappeared into traffic.
Lily held the envelope tightly.
Hours later, Emily opened it.
The first thing she saw made her stop breathing.
A legal document.
A photograph.
And a handwritten note.
Emily read the note twice.
Her hands began to shake.
Because Arthur Sterling had not given Lily a reward.
He had given her a warning.

And the final sentence made Emily's blood run cold.
“Your daughter saved my life today. Tomorrow, I may need to save hers.”
