Chapter 4 - THE BOX MY MOTHER HID

I didn’t sleep that night.
How could I?
My entire life had been turned upside down in less than an hour.
A stranger had walked into my workplace and told me my mother had stolen another woman’s life.
The most dangerous man in Chicago had looked at me like I was a ghost.
And a baby who had never trusted anyone had fallen asleep in my arms like he already knew me.
Nothing made sense.
Nothing except one thing.
My mother had lied.
The next morning, I stood outside my childhood home with shaking hands.
The small blue house looked exactly the same.
The same cracked front steps.
The same old flower pot beside the door.
The same place where my mother had spent twenty-seven years raising me.
Except now…
It felt like a stranger’s house.
I unlocked the door slowly.
“Mom…”
The silence answered me.
She had been gone for three months.
Three months since cancer took the only person I had ever truly trusted.
Three months since I buried the woman who raised me.
And now I was questioning everything she ever told me.
I walked into her bedroom.
The smell of her perfume still lingered.
That almost broke me.
Because even after death, she still felt close.
“Why didn’t you tell me the truth?”
My voice cracked.
I looked around.
Then I remembered.
The drawer.
The one she always kept locked.
The one she told me never to touch.
I opened the closet.
Behind her old sweaters was a small wooden box.
My heart started beating faster.
Because I had seen that box before.
Many times.
But my mother had always hidden it whenever I entered the room.
I carried it to the bed.
The lock was old.
One small hit with a hairpin was enough.
Inside were papers.
Photos.
A necklace.
And one envelope.
My name was written on it.
Mara.
My hands trembled as I opened it.
The letter began with one sentence.
“My daughter, if you are reading this, then I failed to protect you.”
I stopped breathing.
I continued.
“I wanted you to live a normal life. I wanted you to grow up without fear. Without the Viscari family. Without their enemies.”
My fingers tightened around the paper.
The Viscari family.
So my mother knew them.
She knew Adrian.
She knew Elena.
The letter continued.
“Elena was my best friend.”
I froze.
Best friend?
Not stranger.
Not someone random.
My mother knew the woman in the photograph.
“She trusted me with the one thing she loved most.”
My eyes moved down the page.
And the next line made my entire body go cold.
“Her daughter.”
I dropped the letter.
“No…”
I whispered.
A sound came from behind me.
A floorboard.
I turned quickly.
Nobody.
But the window was open.
And the box on the bed was gone.
Someone had been inside.
Someone knew I had found the truth.
I grabbed my phone and stepped back.
Then it rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
“Hello?”
A man’s voice spoke.
“Mara.”
My blood froze.
“How do you know my name?”
A pause.
Then:
“Because I knew you before you knew yourself.”
The line went silent.
I looked around the room.
And suddenly I realized something terrifying.
Someone had been watching me my entire life.
Later that afternoon, Adrian Viscari arrived at my house.
I didn’t invite him.
But somehow…
I wasn’t surprised.
Two black SUVs stopped outside.
His men surrounded the street.
And Adrian walked toward my door.
No suit.
No intimidating smile.
Just a man who looked exhausted.
“You followed me?”
I asked.
“No.”
“Then how did you find me?”
He looked at the house.
“Your mother’s address was in Elena’s old records.”
My stomach tightened.
“You knew my mother?”
“Yes.”
The answer came too quickly.
I stared at him.
“Then tell me everything.”
Adrian looked away.
“That’s not a conversation we have standing outside.”
“Why?”
“Because the people who took that box are looking for the same answers.”
I stepped closer.
“What answers?”
His eyes met mine.
“The truth about Elena’s death.”
The air disappeared from my lungs.
“She died in an accident.”
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
“That’s what I was told.”
“But you don’t believe it.”
“No.”
His voice became darker.
“Because the night my wife died…”
He looked at me.
“She was carrying proof that someone inside my own family betrayed me.”
Before I could respond, a loud crash came from inside the house.
We both turned.
The front window shattered.
Adrian reacted instantly.
He grabbed me and pulled me down.
Glass exploded above us.
His men rushed forward.
“Boss!”
Adrian covered me with his body.
For the first time, I saw something in his eyes.
Not anger.
Not revenge.
Fear.
Fear that I would get hurt.
When the shooting stopped, Adrian looked at me.
“You’re coming with me.”
I shook my head.
“No.”
His expression hardened.
“Mara.”
“I’m done running from secrets.”
I stood up.
“I want answers.”
He stared at me.
Then slowly nodded.
“Fine.”
He opened the car door.
“But understand something.”
“What?”
His voice was quiet.
“Once you enter my world…”
He looked at the destroyed house.
“You don’t walk away easily.”
I stepped into the car.
May you like
Because I finally understood.
My old life was already gone.
