Chapter 1 - THE BABY WHO KNEW MY NAME

The mafia boss had killed men without hesitation.
Everyone in the city knew that.
But that night, the most feared man in Chicago froze because of a baby.
A baby who reached for a waitress.
A baby who had never touched another stranger.
And a baby who looked at me like he had been waiting for me his entire life.
The first words out of the mafia boss’s mouth were not a threat.
They were a whisper.
“She died two years ago…”
His eyes moved from the photograph on the wall…
To my face.
The same dark eyes.
The same small smile.
The same woman.
Except the woman in the picture was supposed to be dead.
And I was standing right in front of him.
My name is Mara Hayes.
And before that night, I was just a waitress trying to survive.
I didn’t know I was connected to the most dangerous family in the city.
I didn’t know my mother had hidden the truth about my past.
And I definitely didn’t know that a little boy in a black vest would expose a secret everyone had spent years burying.
But everything changed on a Friday night at Ristorante Bellagio.
The night the dragon walked through the door.
“Table six needs another bottle.”
“Mara, the chef needs you in the kitchen.”
“Mara, careful with those plates.”
The voices came from every direction.
Friday nights at Bellagio were always insane.
Steam covered the windows.
Customers laughed too loudly.
Expensive perfume mixed with the smell of seafood and wine.
The wealthy guests talked about vacations, investments, and luxury cars while people like me counted every dollar in our heads.
I carried three plates on one arm and smiled.
That was my talent.
Pretending everything was fine.
Because everything was not fine.
My rent was late.
My car needed repairs.
And my bank account looked like a joke.
But I had learned something a long time ago.
Nobody cared about your problems when you were serving them dinner.
“Mara.”
I turned.
My manager, Daniel, stood beside me.
His face looked different.
Serious.
Worried.
“What happened?”
He glanced toward the entrance.
“Table seven.”
I followed his eyes.
Then I understood.
The entire restaurant had changed.
The laughter disappeared.
The conversations became whispers.
Two men in black suits entered first.
They didn’t walk like customers.
They walked like security.
Like men who expected danger.
Their eyes scanned every corner.
Then they stepped aside.
And he entered.
The room went silent.
Not quiet.
Silent.
The kind of silence that happened when everyone knew something dangerous had arrived.
He was tall.
Powerful.
Cold.
His black suit looked custom-made.
A scar crossed his cheek.
His hands were covered in tattoos.
And on his knuckles was a dragon.
My mother’s warning suddenly echoed in my head.
“If you ever see men with dragons on their skin, you run.”
I had laughed when she said it.
I thought it was just another strange thing from a scared woman.
I wasn’t laughing anymore.
Because the dragon was standing ten feet away from me.
And he was carrying a baby.
That was the part nobody expected.
A dangerous man holding a tiny child.
The baby looked around eight months old.
He wore a small black vest over a white shirt.
Like a miniature version of his father.
But unlike his father…
He looked innocent.
Soft.
Safe.
The contrast was almost painful.
Daniel appeared beside me.
“That’s Adrian Viscari.”
I swallowed.
The name meant something.
Everyone knew it.
The Viscari family controlled half the city’s underground world.
People disappeared after crossing them.
Deals were made in whispers.
Enemies learned quickly.
“Why is he here?” I whispered.
Daniel looked at me.
“Don’t ask questions.”
That answer scared me more.
“Table seven is yours.”
My eyes widened.
“You’re joking.”
“No.”
“Daniel—”
“Smile, Mara.”
He lowered his voice.
“And be careful.”
I grabbed my notepad.
My hands suddenly felt heavier.
I walked toward the table.
Every step felt like walking closer to a storm.
Adrian Viscari sat down.
His men surrounded him.
I stopped.
“Good evening.”
My voice sounded calmer than I felt.
“Welcome to Bellagio. Can I get you started with something to drink?”
The mafia boss looked up.
His eyes locked onto mine.
For a moment…
The entire world disappeared.
His expression didn’t change.
But something in his eyes did.
Recognition.
Confusion.
Like he was searching for an answer.
Then he looked at my name tag.
“Mara.”
The way he said it was strange.
Like he was testing the name.
“Amarone,” he said.
Then he looked at the baby.
“Milk for him.”
“Yes, sir.”
I turned.
Then the baby reached for me.
I stopped.
The little boy stretched his arms toward me.
His tiny fingers opened and closed.
Everyone noticed.
One of Adrian’s guards frowned.
“He never does that.”
I looked back.
“What?”
The guard stared at the baby.
“He hates strangers.”
Adrian tried to pull him closer.
The baby refused.
A small cry escaped.
Then another.
The terrifying mafia boss who made grown men afraid suddenly looked helpless.
“Come on, Luca,” Adrian whispered.
But Luca didn’t look at his father.
He looked at me.
Like I was the only person in the room.
I stepped closer without thinking.
“It’s okay.”
My voice softened.
“Maybe he just wants to see the lights.”
The second Luca saw my face clearly…
He stopped crying.
His little mouth opened.
And he smiled.
A real smile.
Then he reached out and grabbed my apron.
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
Adrian Viscari stared at his son’s hand.
“What?”
His guard looked shocked.
“Boss…”
“He has never done that.”
Adrian slowly removed Luca’s hand.
The baby immediately reached for me again.
This time he grabbed my thumb.
And held on tightly.
Something inside my chest cracked.
Because I understood that grip.
The desperate need to hold onto someone.
Anyone.
Adrian stared at me.
“Hold him.”
I blinked.
“What?”
“Hold my son.”
I looked around.
Every person at the table was watching.
“You want me to?”
His expression was unreadable.
“If you don’t, he will scream until this entire restaurant hears him.”
I hesitated.
Then I looked down at Luca.
Those little eyes were trusting me.
“Okay.”
I lifted him carefully.
The moment Luca touched my arms…
He relaxed.
Completely.
His head rested against my shoulder.
His breathing became peaceful.
And Adrian Viscari looked more frightened than I had ever seen anyone.
Because he knew something impossible had happened.
“He doesn’t let anyone hold him,” Adrian said quietly.
I looked at the baby.
“Maybe he just likes me.”
Adrian’s eyes narrowed.
“No.”
His voice dropped.
“Only one person ever made him feel safe like that.”
I looked up.
“Who?”
The mafia boss went silent.
Then he answered.
“His mother.”
A cold feeling moved through me.
“Where is she?”
Adrian looked away.
“She died two years ago.”
My fingers tightened around Luca.
I didn’t know why.
But suddenly…
I felt like I was standing in the middle of someone else’s tragedy.
Then Adrian looked behind me.
At the mirror above the bar.
His face changed.
I followed his eyes.
And my blood turned cold.
Because hanging behind the bottles was an old photograph.
A woman in a black dress.
A woman smiling softly.
A woman with my exact face.
Adrian whispered:
“She died two years ago…”
Then he looked at me.
“How is that possible?”
I couldn’t answer.
Because I had the same question.
And then he asked the one question that would change my entire life.
“Mara…”
May you like
His voice became dangerously quiet.
“Who are you?”
