ONE CALL TO BRING HIM HOME / Chapter 7 / 15

Chapter 7 - The Message He Skipped

Daniel found the voicemail between a contractor's estimate and a reminder from his dentist.

He took it into the hallway.

Elena followed only as far as the door.

“Daddy?”

Lucy's voice was barely louder than the recording's hiss.

“I'm trying to be good. Can you come home?”

A breath.

“Please don't tell her I called.”

The message ended.

Thirty-one seconds.

Eleven days old.

Daniel bent forward until his elbows rested on his knees.

He didn't make a sound.

Elena stood beside him without offering an excuse.

At last he held out the phone.

“The detective needs this.”

“Yes.”

“I was five hours away that night.”

There was nothing she could say to soften that.

Later, Vanessa's lawyer contacted his attorney with a proposal: a private separation, no public accusations, and a statement describing the kitchen incident as poor judgment during a difficult parenting adjustment.

Daniel read the draft once.

“There was no parenting adjustment,” he said.

“There was a hungry child on my floor.”

“They'll argue you left Vanessa responsible,” his attorney warned.

“I did.”

“Your own choices will be examined.”

Daniel looked through the glass at Lucy, who was carefully eating a small meal while a nurse sat nearby.

“They should be.”

He ended the engagement in writing.

He gave investigators permission to access the household systems he controlled and preserved his messages instead of deleting the ones that embarrassed him.

Then he canceled the trip he was supposed to take Monday.

His business partner complained about the closing schedule.

“Find someone else.”

“Daniel, you can't just walk away from—”

“Watch me.”

That evening, Lucy asked whether Vanessa would be mad about the canceled school.

“She doesn't get to decide where you live,” Daniel said.

Lucy twisted the edge of her blanket.

“She said you liked the house better when it was quiet.”

He felt the words land exactly where they belonged.

He had said he needed quiet after work.

He had said it often.

“I should never have made you feel that way.”

His phone lit up with a message from an unknown number.

Ask your maid why she keeps a stolen bracelet in her bag.

Before he could show Ruiz, a second message arrived.

Tomorrow, everyone else gets to ask her too.
