ONE CALL TO BRING HIM HOME / Chapter 12 / 15

Chapter 12 - No More Practicing

The interview took place in a room with soft chairs and a shelf of ordinary toys.

No one wore a uniform.

No one told Lucy what to say.

Before they arrived, Daniel had asked the specialist how to help.

“Don't rehearse answers,” she told him.

“Let her know she can tell the truth, say she doesn't know, or ask for a break.”

He repeated only that.

When Lucy asked whether he wanted her to be brave, he shook his head.

“You don't have to take care of my feelings.”

Elena came because Lucy had asked to see her beforehand.

They sat together in the waiting area.

“What if I say something wrong?” Lucy whispered.

“Then you can correct it.”

“What if I forget?”

“You can say you forgot.”

Lucy considered that as if nobody had ever offered it before.

Inside, she spoke with the interviewer alone.

Outside, Daniel watched the second hand circle the wall clock.

Elena kept her own hands clasped between her knees.

When Lucy came out, she didn't look triumphant.

She looked tired.

“Can we go?”

“Yes,” Daniel said immediately.

In the car, she asked for music.

He put on the song she chose and didn't ask her to repeat the interview.

The evidence took shape without requiring Lucy to perform her pain for every adult who wanted answers.

Her account was considered alongside the medical findings, school records, Walter's messages, Elena's video, and the household recordings.

Weeks passed.

Vanessa's threats stopped coming directly and started arriving through lawyers.

Elena answered through her own counsel.

Daniel followed the safety arrangements and kept showing up for appointments.

Then Ruiz called.

Charges had been filed in connection with Lucy's treatment.

Vanessa was taken into custody and later released under restrictions that barred contact with the child and witnesses.

Elena sat at her kitchen table after the call.

Her mother set tea in front of her.

“Is it over?”

“No,” Elena said.

“But she doesn't get to call it nothing anymore.”

Across town, Daniel received another document from the school.

A scanned note had been tucked into Lucy's intake materials.

It was in Lucy's handwriting.
