Chapter 11 - The Story Written for Her

Vanessa hadn't just planned to send Lucy away.
She had tried to decide what people would believe when Lucy arrived.
Daniel read the school emails in his attorney's office.
Attention-seeking.
Dishonest around food.
Prone to inventing mistreatment.
There was no supporting diagnosis.
Just Vanessa's words, delivered with the confidence of someone used to being accepted.
“She was getting ahead of the story,” he said.
His attorney nodded.
“The investigators have copies.”
Daniel went home to Anna's house and found Lucy beneath the kitchen table.
A plate had slipped from her hands and broken.
Anna knelt several feet away, giving her space.
“Nobody is angry,” she said.
Lucy held both hands over her head.
Daniel stopped in the doorway.
Every instinct told him to rush forward and pull her into his arms.
He crouched instead.
“Lucy. It's Dad.”
“I'll clean it.”
“Anna's getting the sharp pieces.”
“I won't eat dinner.”
He put one hand flat on the floor so she could see it wasn't reaching for her.
“Dinner isn't something you lose.”
She shook her head.
“It is if you waste things.”
“Not here.”
It took twelve minutes before she came out.
Daniel stayed on the floor for all twelve.
That night, Lucy asked if bad people always looked mean.
He thought of Vanessa laughing beneath strings of lights at their engagement party.
Of the way guests had praised her for taking on another woman's child.
“No,” he said.
“Then how do you know?”
“You pay attention to what they do. And you listen when someone says they're scared.”
Lucy pulled the blanket to her chin.
“You didn't.”
He took the words without defending himself.
“I didn't. You deserved better.”
After she fell asleep, his attorney called.
Vanessa was disputing the accusations and blaming both Lucy and Elena.
Investigators needed to clarify several details with the child through a trained interviewer.
Daniel understood the reason.
He still felt sick.
In the morning, when he gently explained the appointment, Lucy's face closed.
“No.”
“You won't be in trouble.”

She backed away from him.
“That's what she said before she made me practice.”
