ONE CALL TO BRING HIM HOME / Chapter 1 / 15

Chapter 1 - The Bowl on the Floor

The little girl was eating from a dog bowl when Elena realized there was no dog in the house.

“Please… I haven't eaten anything.”

Eight-year-old Lucy Oleso crouched on the kitchen tile, her trembling fingers hovering over cold rice.

Her braids were coming apart.

Tears cut clean lines through the grime on her cheeks.

At the counter, Vanessa Cross plucked a green grape from a crystal dish.

Her magenta satin blouse shone beneath the lights.

“Then eat from there.”

She said it without raising her voice.

That was what made Elena's stomach turn.

This wasn't a woman losing control.

This was a woman enjoying it.

Elena stood behind the partly open hallway door, holding a stack of towels.

It was her third day working in the house.

Until that morning, Vanessa had told her Lucy was sick upstairs and shouldn't be disturbed.

Now the child reached into the bowl.

A few grains dropped beside her knee.

“Those too,” Vanessa said.

Elena set down the towels before she dropped them.

She took out her phone and called the number printed on her employment paperwork.

“Mr. Oleso… come back right now. It's about the girl.”

On the other end, a chair scraped.

“What happened to Lucy?”

“Your fiancée is making her eat from a pet bowl. She's shaking. I think she needs a doctor.”

Silence.

Then a different voice, stripped of every polite edge.

“I'm coming. Stay with her.”

“Please hurry.”

Elena ended the call and opened her camera.

She captured the bowl, Lucy's bare feet, and Vanessa pointing at the scattered rice.

Eleven seconds.

Then Lucy tried to stand and caught the cabinet for balance.

Elena stopped recording.

Enough.

She stepped into the kitchen.

“Lucy, sweetheart. Sit in this chair.”

Vanessa turned slowly.

“Who told you to come in here?”

Elena pulled out a chair.

Lucy stared at it as if it were a trap.

“You can sit,” Elena said.

“She can do what I tell her.”

Vanessa slid off her stool.

The little girl immediately lowered her eyes.

Elena put herself between them.

“I've called her father.”

For the first time, Vanessa stopped smiling.

Her gaze dropped to the phone in Elena's hand.

“Give me that.”

“No.”

Vanessa reached past her and took Lucy's wrist.

“Then let's ask the child what really happened.”

May you like

Lucy went completely still.

And Elena understood that the bowl wasn't the thing she feared most.
