Chapter 10 - What the Camera Kept

The missing footage didn't return with a clever password or a lucky click.
It took days, preservation requests, and records supplied by the camera service.
During those days, Elena answered questions, stayed off social media, and listened to her mother pretend she wasn't worried about money.
Lucy left the hospital under a safety plan arranged with the professionals handling her care.
For now, she and Daniel stayed with his sister, Anna.
Vanessa had no contact with her.
The first night, Lucy asked whether Anna's refrigerator locked.
Anna set her mug down carefully.
“No, sweetheart.”
“At night?”
“Not at night either.”
Daniel went into the bathroom and shut the door until he could breathe normally.
Then he returned, because leaving was the habit he was trying to break.
On the fourth day after discharge, Ruiz called Elena.
“We have footage you need to know about.”
Elena met her at the station.
On the screen, the upstairs landing appeared in gray morning light.
The timestamp was eleven minutes after Elena's emergency call.
Vanessa came up the stairs.
In her right hand was a small velvet pouch.
She entered the staff room.
Seventy seconds later, she came out without it.
The camera didn't show inside the room.
Ruiz said that plainly.
But the timing mattered.
So did a clip recorded earlier that morning, showing Vanessa wearing the same bracelet she later reported missing.
“She told us it disappeared the previous evening,” Ruiz said.
Elena watched Vanessa's image freeze beside the doorway.
“And the deleted files?”
“The account records show deletion activity after Daniel asked her to leave the house. We're still working through it.”
No magic.
No instant justice.
Just one lie colliding with something it couldn't explain.
Elena let out a breath she felt she'd been holding for a week.
Ruiz closed the laptop.
“There's something else. The residential school provided its correspondence.”
“Was Daniel telling the truth about the inquiry?”
“That part matches their records. Vanessa told them Lucy's father authorized her to finish the arrangements.”
Elena leaned forward.
“What did she tell them about Lucy?”
May you like
Ruiz paused.
“That the child had a history of making false accusations against caregivers.”
