CHAPTER 4: THE FILE THAT SHOULD HAVE DISAPPEARED

Arthur Vance did not sleep that night.
The mansion that had once felt like a symbol of success suddenly felt like a place filled with shadows.
Every hallway carried a memory.
Every room reminded him of the life he thought he had built.
But now, he questioned everything.
The marriage.
The promises.
The secrets.
Most of all…
The people he trusted.
At 5:30 in the morning, Arthur sat alone in his private office.
The letter from his first wife was placed carefully on the desk.
Beside it were Benjamin’s trust fund records.
Arthur had spent hours reviewing every transaction.
And the more he found…
The angrier he became.
Millions of dollars had been moved.
Not once.
Not twice.
Over several years.
Small amounts.
Carefully hidden.
Designed to avoid attention.
Whoever did this knew exactly what they were doing.
Arthur picked up his phone.
“David, I need you here immediately.”
His longtime attorney answered.
“Arthur? Is everything okay?”
“No.”
Arthur looked at the documents.
“Something has been happening inside my family, and I need to know exactly how deep it goes.”
Two hours later, David arrived at the mansion.
He was one of the few people Arthur trusted.
After entering the office, David placed his briefcase down.
“You look like you haven’t slept.”
“I haven’t.”
Arthur handed him the files.
“Review everything.”
David opened the documents.
Within minutes, his expression changed.
“Arthur…”
“What?”
“These withdrawals were approved through a secondary authorization.”
Arthur leaned forward.
“What does that mean?”
“It means someone with access to the family business accounts helped move this money.”
Arthur’s eyes narrowed.
“Who had access?”
David hesitated.
“That’s the problem.”
“Tell me.”
“Only three people.”
Arthur waited.
“You.”
“Me.”
“Your financial director.”
Arthur nodded.
“And?”
David looked uncomfortable.
“Your wife, Elena.”
The room became silent.
Arthur already knew the answer.
But hearing it from someone else made it real.
“She had access.”
“Yes.”
Arthur stood and walked toward the window.
Outside, the garden was peaceful.
Almost mocking him.
“Find every transaction.”
David nodded.
“I will.”
“And David…”
The attorney looked up.
“Do not tell anyone.”
“Not even Elena?”
“Especially not Elena.”
Because Arthur understood something now.
If Elena had spent years hiding the truth, she would not give up easily.
A few hours later, Maria found Arthur in the kitchen.
She looked exhausted.
“You should rest, Mr. Vance.”
Arthur looked at her.
“You knew something was wrong.”
Maria lowered her eyes.
“I suspected.”
“How long?”
Maria took a breath.
“Almost a year.”
Arthur was surprised.
“A year?”
“I noticed Benjamin’s trust documents were being moved around. I tried asking Elena about it.”
“And?”
“She told me I was just a nanny. That I didn’t understand money.”
Arthur’s expression darkened.
“She said that?”
Maria nodded.
“But I knew something wasn’t right.”
Arthur looked at her.
“Why didn’t you tell me sooner?”
Maria became quiet.
“Because I was afraid.”
“Of Elena?”
Maria nodded.
“She warned me that if I caused problems, I would lose my job.”
Arthur felt a wave of guilt.
This woman had been protecting his son while he was unaware of what was happening inside his own home.
“You should have come to me.”
“I tried.”
Arthur looked confused.
“When?”
Maria reached into her bag.
She pulled out an old envelope.
“I wrote this six months ago.”
Arthur took it.
“But Elena found it before I could give it to you.”
Arthur opened the envelope.
Inside was a short note.
"Mr. Vance, I believe Benjamin may not be safe. Please look into the trust account before it is too late."
Arthur’s hands tightened around the paper.
“She knew,” he whispered.
Maria nodded.
“She knew I was watching.”
Suddenly, a loud sound came from upstairs.
A door slamming.
Both of them looked toward the ceiling.
Arthur immediately recognized the sound.
Elena’s office.
He walked quickly toward the stairs.
“Stay here.”
Maria followed.
“Mr. Vance—”
“I need to know what she’s doing.”
When Arthur reached the second floor, he saw Elena standing outside her office.
Holding a suitcase.
His eyes narrowed.
“What are you doing?”
Elena froze.
For a moment, neither of them spoke.
Then she slowly smiled.
“I was hoping you wouldn’t find out this way.”
Arthur stared at the suitcase.
“You’re leaving?”
Elena looked at him.
“No.”
She opened the suitcase.
Inside were folders.
Documents.
And a passport.
Arthur’s expression changed.
“What is all this?”
Elena stepped closer.
“You really should have asked more questions before choosing sides.”
Arthur felt a chill.
“What does that mean?”
Elena smiled coldly.
“It means you think you’re protecting Benjamin.”
She picked up one document.
“But you have no idea who Benjamin really belongs to.”
Arthur froze.
The hallway suddenly felt colder.
“What did you say?”
Elena looked directly into his eyes.
“The truth about your son has been hidden for eight years.”
Arthur’s heart raced.
“Explain.”
But Elena only smiled.
“Not here.”
“Then where?”
She looked toward the front door.
“Somewhere you can’t stop me.”
Arthur stepped forward.
But before he could reach her, Elena said five words that stopped him completely.
“Ask Maria who she really is.”
Arthur turned slowly.
His eyes moved toward Maria standing at the bottom of the stairs.
And for the first time…
May you like
He wondered if he had been protecting the wrong person.
