CHAPTER 14: THE MAN WHO BUILT THE LIES

Arthur Vance walked alone into the darkness.
Every step through the old estate felt like walking deeper into a nightmare.
The walls were covered with dust.
The floors were covered with years of forgotten memories.
But Arthur barely noticed any of it.
His mind had only one thought.
Benjamin.
His son was somewhere nearby.
Waiting for him.
Arthur entered the main hall.
A single light turned on.
Then another.
Slowly, the entire room illuminated.
And at the end of the hall stood a man.
Older.
Gray hair.
A calm expression.
A man Arthur had only ever seen in photographs.
Richard Vance.
Arthur stopped.
For several seconds, neither man spoke.
Finally, Arthur whispered:
“You’re alive.”
Richard smiled.
“Yes.”
Arthur’s fists tightened.
“You let everyone believe you were dead.”
Richard nodded.
“I did.”
“Why?”
Richard looked around the old house.
“Because sometimes the only way to see who people truly are…”
He paused.
“…is to disappear.”
Arthur laughed bitterly.
“So you destroyed my entire family as some kind of test?”
Richard’s expression changed slightly.
“No.”
He walked closer.
“I exposed what was already broken.”
Arthur stared at him.
“You kidnapped my son.”
Richard shook his head.
“I protected your son.”
“Where is Benjamin?”
Richard looked toward another room.
“Safe.”
Arthur stepped forward.
“I want to see him.”
“You will.”
Richard remained calm.
“But first, you need to understand the truth.”
Arthur looked around.
“I’m tired of secrets.”
Richard nodded.
“Good.”
He walked toward an old wooden table.
On top were several folders.
“Because the biggest secret was never about Benjamin.”
Arthur frowned.
“What does that mean?”
Richard opened the first folder.
Inside were old business records.
“The Vance empire was never built only on money.”
Arthur looked down.
“What is this?”
“The foundation.”
Richard pointed to the documents.
“Your father and I created a private system to protect our family’s assets.”
Arthur studied the papers.
“Then why hide it?”
Richard’s expression became colder.
“Because power attracts people who want to control it.”
Arthur looked at him.
“And you thought hiding everything was the answer?”
“Yes.”
Arthur shook his head.
“No. You created a family full of lies.”
Richard didn’t deny it.
“Maybe.”
That answer surprised Arthur.
For the first time, Richard didn’t look like a powerful businessman.
He looked like an old man carrying regret.
“I made mistakes.”
Arthur stared.
“You think?”
Richard continued.
“But I was not the one who betrayed you.”
Arthur looked confused.
“Then who was?”
Richard opened another folder.
Inside were documents with signatures.
Arthur’s eyes widened.
Because he recognized them.
His father’s signature.
His grandfather’s signature.
And one more.
Someone else.
“Elena?”
Richard shook his head.
“No.”
Arthur looked closer.
Then his face changed.
“Michael.”
Richard nodded.
“Your brother was involved much earlier than you knew.”
Arthur felt anger rising.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because I was trying to find proof.”
Arthur laughed.
“Everyone is always trying to protect me.”
His voice became painful.
“But nobody ever trusts me enough to tell me the truth.”
Richard looked at him.
“That is my greatest regret.”
Suddenly, a door opened.
Arthur turned.
Benjamin walked out.
“Dad!”
Arthur immediately ran to him.
He dropped to his knees and pulled his son into his arms.
“Are you hurt?”
Benjamin shook his head.
“I was scared.”
Arthur hugged him tighter.
“I’m here now.”
Benjamin whispered:
“Grandpa said he was protecting me.”
Arthur looked at Richard.
“Grandpa?”
Richard lowered his eyes.
“I know what I am to him.”
Arthur stood.
“You don’t get to act like family after everything.”
Richard accepted the anger.
“I understand.”
Benjamin looked confused.
“Dad… is he bad?”
Arthur looked at his son.
He didn’t know how to answer.
Because the truth was complicated.
Richard had lied.
But he had also protected Benjamin.
Just like everyone else.
Everyone had done terrible things while claiming they had good reasons.
And Arthur was exhausted from trying to separate the two.
Then suddenly…
A loud crash came from outside.
Everyone turned.
Richard’s expression changed.
“They found us.”
Arthur immediately grabbed Benjamin’s hand.
“Who?”
Richard looked toward the window.
“The Circle.”
The lights went out.
The estate fell into darkness.
Then voices echoed outside.
“Arthur Vance!”
Arthur recognized the voice.
Michael.
His own brother.
Richard looked at him.
“This is the moment you need to decide.”
Arthur frowned.
“Decide what?”
“Whether you want revenge…”
A pause.
“…or whether you want to save your family.”
Arthur looked at Benjamin.
Then toward the entrance.
The door began shaking.
Someone was trying to break in.
Richard handed Arthur a small flash drive.
“What is this?”
“The evidence.”
Arthur looked at him.
“Evidence of what?”
Richard’s voice became serious.
“Everything.”
“The Circle.”
“Michael.”
“Elena.”
“The truth about Benjamin.”
Arthur stared at the drive.
“Why give this to me now?”
Richard looked at him.
“Because I was wrong.”
The admission shocked Arthur.
Richard continued:
“I spent my life protecting the Vance legacy.”
He looked at Benjamin.
“But I forgot the most important part of a legacy.”
Arthur waited.
“Family.”
The front door exploded open.
People rushed inside.
Arthur pulled Benjamin behind him.
Richard stepped forward.
For the first time, he looked ready to fight.
A man entered the room.
Arthur recognized him.
The leader of The Circle.
The person who had controlled everything from the shadows.
He smiled.
“Finally.”
Arthur stared.
“Who are you?”
The man laughed.
“You really don’t remember?”
Arthur froze.
Because that voice…
That voice had been part of his childhood.
The man stepped into the light.
And Arthur’s world shattered.
Because the person standing before him was someone he trusted his entire life.
Someone he never suspected.
May you like
Someone who had been watching the Vance family fall apart from the beginning.
