CHAPTER 3: THE LETTER FROM THE PAST

Arthur Vance stood frozen in the middle of his living room.

The letter in his hand felt heavier than any business contract he had ever signed.

For years, Arthur believed he knew every chapter of his life.

He believed he knew every person who mattered.

He believed the people closest to him would never betray him.

But now, one hidden letter had opened a door he had spent years keeping closed.

A door leading straight back to the past.

Maria watched his face carefully.

“Mr. Vance…”

Arthur didn’t answer.

His eyes stayed fixed on the handwriting.

The curves of every letter.

The familiar way the words were written.

He knew exactly who had written it.

“No…”

His voice was barely a whisper.

“This isn’t possible.”

Maria stepped closer.

“Who wrote it?”

Arthur slowly lowered the paper.

“Someone who should never have been able to send me anything.”

Before Maria could ask another question, footsteps echoed from the staircase.

Both of them looked up.

Elena stood there.

Her expression had changed completely.

She was no longer angry.

She was nervous.

And Arthur noticed.

“You went through my office?”

Her voice was sharp.

Arthur looked at her.

“No.”

He held up the letter.

“I found this.”

The color drained from Elena’s face.

For a brief second, she said nothing.

And that silence told Arthur everything.

“You know what this is.”

Elena quickly recovered.

“Arthur, you need to calm down.”

“Calm down?”

He laughed bitterly.

“You hid documents in my own house.”

“It’s not what you think.”

Arthur walked closer.

“Then tell me what it is.”

Elena looked away.

“I was trying to protect you.”

Maria immediately shook her head.

“Protect him from the truth?”

Elena glared at her.

“You have no idea what you’re talking about.”

Arthur opened the letter again.

The first sentence stared back at him.

"Arthur, if you are reading this, Elena has already started taking control of everything you built."

His hands tightened.

“Who is this from?”

Elena remained silent.

“Answer me!”

His voice shook the entire room.

Benjamin, who had been listening from the staircase, appeared quietly.

“Dad?”

Arthur immediately softened.

He didn’t want his son seeing this.

He turned around.

“Buddy, go back to your room.”

“But Dad…”

“Please.”

Benjamin looked scared.

Maria gently walked over.

“Come on, Benjamin. Let’s get your favorite book.”

The boy hesitated.

Then followed Maria upstairs.

Once they were alone, Arthur looked back at Elena.

“Who wrote this?”

Elena finally spoke.

Her voice was quieter.

“Your first wife.”

The room went silent.

Arthur felt like the air had disappeared.

“My first wife died twelve years ago.”

Elena nodded.

“I know.”

“Then explain this.”

She didn’t.

And that frightened Arthur more than any answer could have.

“You knew about this?”

Elena swallowed.

“I knew she left something behind.”

“Something?”

Arthur’s anger grew.

“You mean evidence?”

Elena stepped forward.

“Arthur, listen to me. She was sick. She was confused. She wasn’t thinking clearly.”

Arthur’s eyes narrowed.

“You’re lying.”

Elena’s face hardened.

“You don’t understand what happened back then.”

“Then make me understand.”

For a moment, Elena looked like she wanted to say something.

But fear stopped her.

That was when Arthur realized something important.

Elena wasn’t hiding a mistake.

She was hiding a disaster.

Arthur unfolded the letter completely.

The next lines made his heart stop.

"Arthur, I found out why Elena became so interested in Benjamin’s inheritance. It was never about money. It was about control."

Arthur looked up slowly.

Elena took a step backward.

“Give me that letter.”

“No.”

“Arthur.”

“No.”

His voice was cold.

“You have lied to me for years.”

Elena’s eyes filled with anger.

“You’re really going to trust a dead woman’s words over mine?”

Arthur looked at the letter.

Then at his wife.

“I don’t know who I can trust anymore.”

That sentence broke something inside Elena.

Because she knew.

The truth was finally coming out.

Arthur turned the page.

And the next paragraph revealed a secret he never expected.

"There is something you need to know about Benjamin. Something Elena has been hiding since the day he was born."

Arthur stopped.

His heartbeat raced.

Benjamin.

His son.

The child he had protected his entire life.

The child whose future he had built everything around.

Arthur looked toward the stairs where Benjamin had disappeared.

“What did you do, Elena?”

She said nothing.

And that silence was the answer.

Arthur slowly folded the letter.

Then he made a decision.

Tomorrow morning, he would open every account.

Every record.

Every secret.

Because if Elena had been lying about Benjamin…

He needed to know the truth.

Even if that truth destroyed his entire family.

But before Arthur could leave the room, Elena whispered something that made him stop.

“Arthur…”

He turned around.

“What?”

Her eyes were filled with fear.

“If you find out everything… you’ll lose the only family you have left.”

Arthur stared at her.

Then he walked away.

Because now he knew one thing.

The biggest threat to his family was not outside his home.

May you like

It had been living beside him all along.
