CHAPTER 10: THE WOMAN WHO CAME BACK FROM THE DEAD

Arthur Vance stopped breathing.
For a moment, he couldn’t understand what he was seeing.
The woman standing in front of him looked impossible.
A ghost from a past he had buried.
A person he had mourned.
A person everyone told him he had lost forever.
“Claire…”
His voice cracked.
The woman stared back at him with tears in her eyes.
“Yes, Arthur.”
Benjamin looked between them.
“Dad… you know her?”
Arthur couldn’t answer.
Because his mind was trapped twelve years in the past.
Claire Bennett.
His first wife.
The woman he believed died after a terrible illness.
The woman whose letter had started this entire nightmare.
The woman who was supposed to be gone.
But she was standing in front of him.
Alive.
Michael watched from the doorway with a cold smile.
“Surprised?”
Arthur turned toward him.
“What did you do?”
Michael shrugged.
“I showed you the truth.”
Arthur’s anger grew.
“You knew she was alive?”
“Yes.”
“And you hid her from me?”
Michael smiled.
“Just like everyone else did.”
Arthur looked back at Claire.
His heart was breaking.
“Why?”
Claire lowered her eyes.
“Because I was trying to protect Benjamin.”
Arthur looked at his son.
Benjamin stood quietly, confused and scared.
“Protect him from what?”
Claire took a deep breath.
“From them.”
She looked at Michael.
Then toward the empty hallway.
“From everyone who wanted to use him.”
Arthur shook his head.
“I don’t understand.”
Claire stepped closer.
“Arthur, everything you believed about the past is wrong.”
The words hurt because Arthur knew they were true.
Too many lies had already been exposed.
“Start talking.”
Claire nodded.
“You deserve to know.”
She looked at Benjamin.
“Eight years ago, when Benjamin was born, I discovered something.”
Arthur waited.
“What?”
Claire’s eyes filled with pain.
“That my pregnancy had been manipulated.”
Arthur frowned.
“What does that mean?”
“It means someone wanted Benjamin to become the center of a battle over your fortune.”
Arthur looked at Michael.
His brother remained silent.
Claire continued.
“Your family had money. Power. Influence.”
She paused.
“But there was one thing they couldn’t control.”
“Me.”
Arthur stared.
“What did you find?”
Claire looked at him.
“I found documents proving someone was trying to change the inheritance laws.”
Arthur’s face hardened.
“Who?”
Claire didn’t answer immediately.
But she didn’t need to.
Everyone already knew.
Michael.
Elena.
And the people behind them.
Arthur looked toward his brother.
“You planned this.”
Michael smiled.
“I planned nothing.”
Claire interrupted.
“Don’t lie.”
Her voice became stronger.
“You knew Benjamin’s birth would affect Arthur’s inheritance. You knew if anything happened to Arthur, control of everything would become complicated.”
Arthur’s eyes narrowed.
“You wanted custody.”
Michael said nothing.
Claire continued.
“They wanted Benjamin controlled.”
Arthur looked at his son.
A terrible realization hit him.
Benjamin was never just a child to them.
He was a key.
A legal advantage.
A way to control billions of dollars.
Arthur walked toward Benjamin.
He knelt down.
“Are you okay?”
Benjamin nodded, but tears filled his eyes.
“Why did everyone lie?”
Arthur had no answer.
Because that question was the one he was asking himself.
Outside the warehouse, David quietly called the police.
But inside, the confrontation continued.
Arthur stood up.
“Claire.”
She looked at him.
“Why did you let me believe you were dead?”
The question carried years of pain.
Claire closed her eyes.
“Because I was forced to disappear.”
Arthur froze.
“By who?”
She looked toward Michael.
Arthur’s brother finally looked uncomfortable.
“I didn’t hurt her.”
Claire laughed sadly.
“No.”
She looked at Arthur.
“He didn’t need to.”
Arthur frowned.
“What happened?”
Claire took a deep breath.
“The night everyone thought I died…”
She paused.
“I was taken.”
Arthur’s face changed.
“Taken?”
“Yes.”
“By who?”
Claire looked at him.
“People working for someone inside your company.”
Arthur felt cold.
“Someone inside?”
Claire nodded.
“They wanted me gone before I could tell you the truth.”
Arthur clenched his fists.
“And you survived?”
“I escaped.”
“How?”
Claire looked down.
“Thomas helped me.”
Everyone turned toward Thomas.
Arthur stared.
“You knew?”
Thomas stepped forward.
“I found her after she disappeared.”
Arthur felt betrayed.
“You knew Claire was alive?”
Thomas looked ashamed.
“Yes.”
“And you said nothing?”
Thomas lowered his head.
“I was trying to keep her safe.”
Arthur’s voice broke.
“You let me grieve.”
Thomas closed his eyes.
“I know.”
For the first time, nobody had an excuse.
Everyone had taken something from Arthur.
Everyone had decided they knew what was best.
And Arthur was tired.
He turned toward Benjamin.
“I’m sorry.”
The boy looked at him.
“For what?”
Arthur swallowed.
“For letting so many people make decisions about your life.”
Benjamin hugged him.
“Dad, you came for me.”
Arthur held him tightly.
“Yes.”
He looked around the room.
“And I will always come for you.”
Then suddenly…
A loud crash came from outside.
Everyone turned.
David rushed inside.
“Arthur!”
“What happened?”
David looked terrified.
“Someone hacked the Vance company accounts.”
Arthur froze.
“How much?”
David’s voice dropped.
“All of it.”
Arthur stared.
“What?”
“The trust funds. The company accounts. The investments.”
A pause.
“Everything is being transferred.”
Arthur looked at Michael.
But Michael wasn’t smiling anymore.
Because he was looking at his own phone.
And the fear on his face told everyone one thing.
Michael wasn’t behind this.
Someone else was.
A message appeared on his screen.
One sentence.
"You thought you were in control. Now watch me take everything."
Arthur looked around.
The enemy they had been fighting…
May you like
Was only the beginning.
