Chapter 8 - SHE CAME TO THE SCHOOL

The emergency order was granted that afternoon.

Temporary.

No unsupervised contact.

No approaching the children at school.

No coming to Megan’s house.

For the first time in three days, I felt like I could breathe.

I should have known better.

At 2:47 p.m., my phone rang.

Lily’s school.

“Mr. Reed, we have a situation.”

I was already standing.

“What situation?”

“Your wife is here.”

My vision blurred.

“What?”

“She attempted to sign Noah out.”

“Noah goes to Oak Street Elementary.”

A pause.

“I’m sorry. She’s at Oak Street.”

I was out the door before the call ended.

Megan shouted after me.

I didn’t stop.

Then my lawyer called.

“Do not go in angry.”

“She’s taking my son.”

“She has not taken him.”

“How do you know?”

“Police are on the way.”

I drove like every red light had personally betrayed me.

When I reached Oak Street, two patrol cars were outside.

Claire stood on the sidewalk.

Perfect hair.

Cream sweater.

Sunglasses.

She looked like she was waiting for brunch.

I got out.

An officer stepped between us immediately.

“Mr. Reed, stay here.”

Claire took off her sunglasses.

“There he is.”

I ignored her.

“Where’s Noah?”

“Inside. Safe.”

Claire laughed.

“He’s safe from his own mother. Congratulations, Daniel.”

I looked at her.

For three days I had imagined screaming.

Calling her every name I knew.

Asking how she could terrify two children and still sleep at night.

Instead, I said:

“Why?”

Her smile faded.

“Why what?”

“Why did you do it?”

“Do what?”

“To them.”

She tilted her head.

“You really believe everything they say?”

“I saw the videos.”

A flicker.

Barely there.

“What videos?”

“The camera.”

Now she knew.

Her jaw tightened.

I stepped closer.

The officer raised a hand.

I stopped.

“I heard the recording too.”

That did it.

For the first time, Claire lost control.

“You went through my things?”

“Your things?”

“That was private!”

“You made our daughter practice accusing me of abuse.”

“She misunderstood.”

“She was crying.”

“She cries when she doesn’t get what she wants!”

The officer glanced at Claire.

She noticed.

Immediately softened.

“I’m sorry. I’m under incredible stress.”

There she was again.

The switch.

Angry to wounded in half a second.

Then the school doors opened.

Noah came out holding the principal’s hand.

He saw me.

“Dad!”

He ran.

I dropped to my knees and caught him.

He buried his face in my chest.

Then he saw Claire.

His whole body locked.

Claire smiled.

“Hi, baby.”

Noah clung tighter.

“You can’t take me.”

Something inside Claire snapped.

“I am your mother.”

Noah started crying.

“You can’t take me!”

The officer stepped toward Claire.

“Ma’am, you need to leave.”

Claire pointed at me.

“You did this.”

I stood, holding Noah.

“No.”

Her eyes locked onto mine.

“You turned them against me.”

“No, Claire.”

“You took my children.”

“No.”

Her face twisted.

“You think you won?”

I didn’t answer.

She put her sunglasses back on.

Then she smiled.

A small smile.

The kind I had once thought was beautiful.

“You still don’t know about the money.”

She walked away.

That night, I checked our bank accounts.

And realized she was right.
