Chapter 4 - THE SON WHO PRETENDED TO HATE ME

The motel door opened.
And there he was.
Ryan.
My son.
The same man who had closed a mansion door in my face only hours earlier was now standing in front of me, blocking two strangers from entering my room.
His face looked different.
Not angry.
Not cold.
Terrified.
“Mom, come behind me.”
I stared at him.
My emotions collided.
Relief.
Confusion.
Pain.
“You.”
My voice cracked.
“You really came?”
Ryan looked at me with tears in his eyes.
“I was always coming.”
I shook my head.
“No.”
I held up the black bag.
“You let me believe you hated me.”
His jaw tightened.
“I know.”
“You watched me walk away.”
“I know.”
“You let me think my own son abandoned me.”
His eyes dropped.
“I know, Mom.”
The sadness in his voice almost broke me.
But the hurt was still there.
“Then explain.”
Before Ryan could answer, one of the men outside stepped forward.
“Ryan, this doesn’t have to become a problem.”
Ryan turned.
His expression changed instantly.
The loving son disappeared.
A protective man stood in his place.
“It already is a problem.”
The man smiled.
“You’re making a mistake.”
“No,” Ryan replied.
“You made the mistake of thinking I wouldn’t fight back.”
The man’s face hardened.
I had never seen my son like this.
The boy who used to cry when I was sick.
The teenager who hated arguments.
The man who avoided conflict.
He was now standing between danger and me.
“Who are they?” I whispered.
Ryan looked at me.
“They work for someone who wants what belongs to you.”
My stomach dropped.
“My inheritance?”
He nodded.
I felt dizzy.
“My own family?”
Ryan looked away.
“Not everyone who sits at your table is family.”
That sentence hurt because I knew exactly who he meant.
Claire.
We left the motel within minutes.
Ryan drove silently.
I sat in the passenger seat holding the black bag.
Neither of us spoke.
Too much had happened.
Too many questions were waiting.
Finally, I couldn’t stay quiet.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
Ryan gripped the steering wheel.
“Because I knew you would never agree.”
“Agree to what?”
“To helping me pretend to hate you.”
I turned toward him.
“You’re saying you planned this?”
“Yes.”
My heart sank.
“You planned to break your mother’s heart?”
His eyes filled.
“No, Mom.”
His voice shook.
“I planned to save your life.”
The car became silent.
I looked at him.
“What are you talking about?”
Ryan pulled into an empty parking lot.
Then he turned off the engine.
“Mom, do you remember when Dad died?”
I nodded.
“Of course.”
“Do you remember the documents he left?”
“The will.”
“Yes.”
He looked at the black bag.
“Dad knew something was wrong before he passed.”
I frowned.
“What?”
“He knew someone close to us was trying to get access to your money.”
My breathing stopped.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because Dad made me promise.”
Ryan reached into his pocket and pulled out an old photograph.
It was my husband.
Holding Ryan as a child.
On the back were handwritten words.
Protect your mother. She trusts too easily.
My eyes filled with tears.
I touched the picture.
Your father…
Even after death, he was trying to protect me.
Ryan continued.
“Claire found out about the inheritance six months ago.”
“And you think she’s trying to take it?”
“I don’t think.”
He looked at me.
“I know.”
I stared at him.
“How?”
Ryan took a deep breath.
“Because I recorded her.”
My heart raced.
“The videos?”
He nodded.
“But there’s more.”
He opened the black bag.
Hidden underneath the folder was a small silver key.
I had never seen it before.
“What is that?”
Ryan looked at me.
“The key to the safety deposit box Dad left behind.”
I froze.
“What’s inside?”
May you like
Ryan’s face turned serious.
“The proof that could destroy Claire.”
