Chapter 12 - THE MISTAKE MY SON COULD NEVER FORGET

Ryan sat across from me.

For the first time since this nightmare began…

He looked like a child again.

A child carrying a secret too heavy for him.

“I was twenty-six,” he said quietly.

“I had just started working with Dad.”

I listened.

“David came to me.”

Ryan looked down.

“He said Dad was becoming paranoid.”

My stomach tightened.

“He told me Dad was making bad decisions because he was getting older.”

I closed my eyes.

Of course.

That was how they worked.

They didn’t attack people.

They planted doubts.

“What did you do?”

Ryan’s voice became smaller.

“I gave him access to one account.”

My eyes widened.

“One account?”

“Yes.”

“For how long?”

“Two weeks.”

I stood.

“Ryan.”

“I know.”

His tears fell.

“I know what it sounds like.”

I shook my head.

“You helped them.”

“No.”

He looked at me desperately.

“I realized what was happening.”

“When?”

“Too late.”

Silence.

“Dad found out.”

I looked at him.

“What happened?”

Ryan wiped his face.

“He wasn’t angry.”

That surprised me.

“He told me I was young. He told me I trusted the wrong person.”

My heart broke.

“Then he told me something I never forgot.”

Ryan looked at me.

“He said, ‘The worst mistakes are not made by bad people. They are made by good people who believe the wrong person.’”

Tears filled my eyes.

That sounded like my husband.

Ryan continued.

“I promised Dad I would fix it.”

“And you spent all these years trying?”

He nodded.

“I watched David.”

“I watched Claire.”

“I collected evidence.”

“Then Claire found out.”

“And that’s when you pushed me away.”

Ryan nodded.

“I knew they were planning something big.”

He looked at me.

“I needed them to think you were alone.”

I sat quietly.

The pain was still there.

But now I understood.

My son wasn’t perfect.

He had made mistakes.

But he had spent years trying to correct them.

Then Ryan’s laptop made a sound.

A new email.

He opened it.

The message had no sender.

Only one attachment.

A photo.

My heart stopped.

Because the photo showed my husband.

Alive.

Standing outside a building.

And the date on the picture was impossible.

It was taken…

Three years after the day he supposedly died.

Ryan looked at me.

Neither of us could speak.

Then a message appeared below the photo.

If you want to know what really happened to your husband… come alone.

I looked at Ryan.

And whispered:

May you like

“Your father might still be alive.”
