Chapter 11 - THE NIGHT MY HUSBAND DISAPPEARED

I stared at Ryan.

“What did she mean?”

He didn’t answer.

That scared me more than anything.

“Ryan.”

He closed his eyes.

“Mom…”

“No.”

I grabbed his arm.

“You promised me the truth.”

He looked broken.

“I don’t know everything.”

“What happened to your father?”

Ryan looked away.

“Dad didn’t just die.”

The room went silent.

My heart stopped.

“What?”

“He had an accident.”

“I know.”

“No, Mom.”

Ryan’s voice shook.

“That’s what everyone told us.”

I felt the air leave my lungs.

“What are you saying?”

Ryan sat down.

“When Dad died, the police called it an accident.”

I remembered that day.

The phone call.

The hospital.

The doctors.

The funeral.

The pain.

But now Ryan was telling me something I had never considered.

“Dad was investigating David.”

I whispered.

“Yes.”

“And then he died.”

Ryan nodded.

I covered my mouth.

“No…”

“I’m sorry.”

I looked at my son.

“How long have you known?”

“Not long.”

“Then why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because I wasn’t sure.”

He showed me another file.

A report.

An old report.

My hands shook as I read it.

There were details I had never seen.

A missing security camera.

A changed timeline.

A witness who disappeared.

My husband’s death suddenly looked different.

Then my phone rang.

Claire.

I answered.

“What do you want?”

Her voice was calm.

Almost gentle.

“I want you to stop.”

“Stop what?”

“Digging.”

I laughed bitterly.

“You destroyed my family.”

“No, Ruth.”

Her voice became colder.

“Your family destroyed itself.”

I felt anger rise.

“You used my son.”

“No.”

She laughed softly.

“Ryan used himself.”

I looked at my son.

Claire continued.

“Do you really think your son came up with this plan alone?”

I froze.

“What are you talking about?”

“Ask him.”

The call ended.

I looked at Ryan.

“Is there something else?”

His face changed.

And I knew.

There was.

“Ryan.”

He sat silently.

“Tell me.”

Finally, he spoke.

“Before Dad died…”

He swallowed.

“I made a mistake.”

My heart sank.

“What mistake?”

May you like

Ryan looked at me with tears in his eyes.

“I trusted David.”
