Chapter 3 - THE SECRET MY SON WAS HIDING

I didn’t move.

The knock came again.

Slow.

Heavy.

Three times.

My eyes stayed locked on the door.

Every instinct told me not to open it.

“Mrs. Ruth?”

A man’s voice came from outside.

I stepped backward.

“How do you know my name?”

Silence.

Then:

“Open the door. We need to talk.”

I grabbed the phone from the table.

My finger hovered over the emergency button.

The man outside spoke again.

“You have something that belongs to Ryan.”

My heart pounded.

The black bag.

They knew.

I quietly picked it up.

My entire life suddenly felt like it had changed overnight.

The son I thought betrayed me had secretly been fighting something I couldn’t see.

And now I was in the middle of it.

The knocking became louder.

“Mrs. Ruth, please.”

I looked around the room.

There was only one exit.

The window.

I grabbed the bag and moved toward it.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message from Ryan.

Mom, don’t open the door.

I froze.

Another message appeared.

They found you faster than I expected.

My hands shook.

I typed back.

Ryan, tell me the truth. What is happening?

The reply came immediately.

I was never trying to get rid of you. I was trying to make Claire believe you were gone.

I stared at the words.

Trying to make Claire believe?

Why?

Another message appeared.

Mom, the woman you invited into our family has been lying to all of us.

I swallowed.

Then the final message arrived.

She knows about your inheritance from Dad.

My entire body went cold.

My husband’s inheritance.

The money I had never touched.

The money I had kept for Ryan’s future.

How did Claire know?

The door handle suddenly moved.

Someone was trying to open it.

I stepped away.

“Mrs. Ruth?”

The voice became impatient.

“You don’t want to make this difficult.”

I looked at the black bag.

Then at the window.

Then at Ryan’s messages.

For years, I thought my biggest fear was losing my son.

I was wrong.

The real danger was someone trying to take everything my family had left behind.

The door lock cracked.

A sharp sound cut through the room.

Someone was forcing their way inside.

I held the bag tightly against my chest.

And then I heard a voice from the hallway.

A voice I recognized.

“Step away from my mother.”

Ryan.

He was here.

But why?

And why was he standing between me and the people who came to hurt me?

May you like

The door opened.

And the truth about my son’s goodbye was finally about to begin.
