Chapter 2 - THE BAG HE LEFT BEHIND

I returned to a small motel that night.
Not because I wanted to.
Because I had nowhere else to go.
The room smelled like old carpet and cleaning chemicals.
A place where strangers stopped for one night.
And somehow, that was where I ended up.
A woman who had spent her entire life building a family.
I placed the black bag on the table.
For almost an hour, I just stared at it.
I was afraid.
Not because of what I might find.
But because I was afraid of what it might prove.
That my son really didn’t love me anymore.
My hands slowly opened the zipper.
Inside was a folder.
A phone.
And a small envelope with my name written on it.
“Mom.”
Just one word.
But I knew his handwriting.
I touched the paper with trembling fingers.
Then I opened it.
The first line made my heart stop.
Mom, if you are reading this, it means I had to do something I never wanted to do.
I sat down.
My eyes moved across the page.
I know you think I abandoned you. I know you think I stopped loving you. But please believe me… I am doing this because I love you more than anything.
I covered my mouth.
Tears filled my eyes.
What was he talking about?
I continued reading.
Do not trust Claire.
My breathing stopped.
I looked around the motel room.
Suddenly every sound felt louder.
The air conditioner.
The traffic outside.
My own heartbeat.
I read the sentence again.
Do not trust Claire.
I had known Claire for six years.
She was beautiful.
Smart.
Polite.
Everyone thought she was perfect.
But over the past year, small things had changed.
The way she controlled Ryan’s schedule.
The way she answered his phone.
The way she always seemed annoyed when I visited.
I had ignored it.
Because I wanted my son to be happy.
The letter continued.
Claire knows about the documents. She knows about the money. She knows something she should never know.
I felt a chill.
“What documents?”
My voice echoed in the empty room.
I grabbed the phone from the bag.
It had a password.
I tried Ryan’s birthday.
Wrong.
My birthday.
Wrong.
Then I remembered something.
A phrase he used when he was little.
Something only we knew.
I typed:
MomAlways
The screen unlocked.
My hands started shaking.
There were videos.
Photos.
Messages.
A folder labeled:
PROOF
I opened the first video.
It showed Claire sitting in the living room.
The same room where she watched Ryan kick me out.
But this time…
She wasn’t calm.
She was angry.
“You promised me she would be gone before the meeting.”
Ryan’s voice answered.
“She’s my mother.”
Claire laughed.
A cold, uncomfortable laugh.
“And she’s the only thing standing between us and everything we want.”
I covered my mouth.
I watched more.
Ryan looked exhausted.
Scared.
“Claire, this isn’t what we agreed.”
“You’re being emotional.”
“No. I’m realizing what you’re doing.”
The video ended.
I sat frozen.
My entire body felt numb.
The woman I thought was my family…
Had been planning something.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
A man’s voice spoke.
“Mrs. Ruth?”
“Yes?”
“You need to leave that motel immediately.”
My heart raced.
“Who is this?”
“You found the bag, didn’t you?”
I stood up.
“Who are you?”
A pause.
Then the man whispered:
“Ryan was right. They know you have it.”
The line went dead.
May you like
At that exact moment…
Someone knocked on my motel door.
