Chapter 13 - THE HOUSE THAT HELD THE TRUTH

The old Sterling property had been abandoned for twenty years.
Nobody went there.
Nobody talked about it.
My father said it held too many painful memories.
But now…
It was the only place left where we could find answers.
The drive there felt endless.
Nobody spoke.
My father stared out the window.
Rachel reviewed every document again.
And I held my mother’s letter against my chest.
The closer we got, the heavier my heart felt.
When we finally arrived, the house looked exactly how I imagined a forgotten place would look.
Broken windows.
Overgrown trees.
A door hanging halfway open.
My father stepped out of the car.
“I never thought I would come back here.”
I looked at him.
“Why?”
He swallowed.
“Because this is where your mother made her final decision.”
I froze.
“What decision?”
He didn’t answer.
We walked inside.
Dust covered everything.
The walls still carried old family photos.
My mother.
My father.
Me as a little girl.
A happy family.
Before everything changed.
Rachel followed the coordinates from the note.
“It’s pointing downstairs.”
We found an old basement door hidden behind a cabinet.
The lock was rusted.
My father used the key from the letter.
Click.
The door opened.
Inside was a small room.
Not a storage room.
A hidden office.
My mother’s secret office.
My hands covered my mouth.
“She was here.”
My father walked slowly inside.
On the desk was an old recorder.
And a locked box.
Rachel opened the box carefully.
Inside were documents.
Bank records.
Photos.
Contracts.
And one name appeared again and again.
Victor Sterling.
But then we found something worse.
A photograph.
Diego.
Victor.
And another person.
A person I knew.
A person I trusted.
I grabbed the picture.
“No…”
My father looked.
His face changed.
Because the third person was someone who had been standing beside us the entire time.
Rachel.
No.
Not Rachel.
Someone else.
Someone much closer.
My father whispered:
“This can’t be true.”
Then the old recorder suddenly turned on.
My mother’s voice filled the room.
“If you are hearing this, then they found a way to come after Elena.”
My eyes filled with tears.
Her voice continued.
“I need you to understand something.”
A pause.
“I wasn’t killed because of money.”
The room became silent.
“I was killed because I discovered the truth.”
The recording stopped.
Then restarted.
Another voice appeared.
A man’s voice.
A voice I knew.
My father stepped back.
Because it was his own voice.
The recording continued.
“You promised you would handle it.”
My father’s face turned white.
“That’s impossible.”
The recording played.
And my mother answered:
“No, Alvin. I need you to understand. If anything happens to me, Elena must know.”
The recording ended.
I stared at my father.
“What did you do?”
His eyes filled with tears.
“I swear to you…”
He looked broken.
“I never hurt your mother.”
But before I could answer…
The basement door slammed shut.
Everyone turned.
Someone was standing upstairs.
A familiar voice echoed through the house.
“You always were too curious, Elena.”
My blood froze.
Diego.
May you like
He smiled from the doorway.
“But now you finally found the truth.”
