Chapter 5 - Blood on the Concrete

Adrian survived.

Barely.

A broken shoulder.

Three cracked ribs.

A deep cut above his left eye.

The doctors said he had been lucky.

I didn’t feel lucky.

I stood outside the trauma room with Lily against my chest, staring at the blood on my sleeve.

It wasn’t mine.

Daniel spoke quietly with the police.

The parking garage cameras had failed three minutes before the attack.

The license plate was stolen.

The driver wore a cap.

Nothing useful.

Vanessa arrived wearing black.

Not wedding white.

Black.

She pushed through the hallway with Richard Carter beside her.

“What did she do to him?” Richard demanded.

Daniel stepped in front of me.

“Careful.”

Richard pointed at Lily.

“This started the moment that child appeared.”

Adrian’s mother, Evelyn, came behind him.

She stopped when she saw the baby.

Her entire face changed.

“Let me see her.”

“No,” I said.

Evelyn looked at me.

Not angry.

Wounded.

That almost made it worse.

During the divorce, she had testified that I was unstable.

She had told the judge I once threw a glass at Adrian.

She left out the fact that he had grabbed my wrist first.

She left out the fact that the glass slipped.

She left out everything that would have made the truth less useful.

“You lied under oath,” I said.

“I was protecting my son.”

“From me?”

“From losing the company.”

“And now?”

Her gaze dropped to Lily.

“Now I may have helped him lose everything else.”

Richard grabbed her arm.

“Enough.”

She pulled free.

It was a small movement.

But everyone saw it.

The surgeon entered the hallway.

“Mr. Carter is awake.”

Vanessa hurried forward.

“I’m his fiancée.”

The doctor checked his chart.

“He asked for Emma Mercer.”

Vanessa stopped.

Richard’s face hardened.

I went inside.

Adrian lay pale beneath white sheets.

His left eye was swollen.

He tried to smile.

It looked terrible.

“You screamed my name,” he said.

“You were hit by a car.”

“So you admit you care.”

“I care when people bleed on my shoes.”

He coughed and grabbed his ribs.

“Don’t make me laugh.”

“That wasn’t a joke.”

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then he whispered, “My father filed the custody case.”

“I know.”

“He used my electronic authorization.”

“I know.”

“I didn’t know about the medical records.”

I watched him.

He looked sincere.

That meant nothing.

Adrian had always been most convincing when he believed half of what he said.

“Did you sleep with Vanessa during our marriage?”

His eyes closed.

“Yes.”

“How long?”

“Eleven months.”

The answer hit harder than I expected.

Not because I still loved him.

Because eleven months meant every apology, every late-night promise, every counseling session had been a performance.

“You let me think I was imagining it.”

“Yes.”

“You watched me blame myself.”

His jaw trembled.

“Yes.”

That was not fear.

Not confusion.

Not his father’s influence.

It was a choice.

A cruel one.

I stepped toward the door.

“Emma.”

“What?”

“I gave Vanessa access to the family trust system.”

I turned around.

“When?”

“Three years ago.”

Before the affair.

Before the divorce.

Before she had any reason to be inside it.

“Why?”

He looked ashamed.

“She told me you were trying to remove me from the company.”

“And you believed her?”

“No.”

He swallowed.

“I wanted leverage against you.”

The door opened behind me.

Daniel stood there holding a phone.

“You both need to see this.”

A security image filled the screen.

It showed the stolen car entering the garage.

The driver’s face was hidden.

But the passenger was clearly visible.

Evelyn Carter.

May you like

Adrian’s mother.
