Chapter 11 - The Custody Trap

Richard disappeared.
His homes were empty.
His accounts were frozen.
His private plane remained in its hangar.
But he was still moving money through shell companies.
And he was still one step ahead.
Two days later, a family court judge ordered me to appear.
Adrian’s custody petition had not been withdrawn.
It had been expanded.
Richard’s attorneys claimed I had endangered Lily by exposing her to corporate conflict.
They used the hospital fire.
The parking garage attack.
The break-in at my apartment.
Every crime committed against me became evidence that I was unsafe.
It was clever.
Sick.
But clever.
The courtroom was closed to the public.
Adrian sat beside his new attorney.
Not Richard’s.
His own.
Vanessa sat in the back under police protection.
She refused to look at me.
The judge reviewed the filings.
“Mr. Carter, are you seeking full custody?”
Adrian stood.
“No.”
His attorney whispered urgently.
Adrian ignored him.
“I’m asking the court to dismiss my petition.”
Richard’s attorney rose.
“Mr. Carter is under emotional distress.”
“I’m under no confusion.”
“Your Honor, Mr. Carter suffered a head injury.”
Adrian looked at the judge.
“I filed for custody before I knew my father was using my name.”
“That is disputed,” the attorney said.
Adrian continued.
“I also threatened to take my daughter from her mother before I had even held the child.”
The room went quiet.
His attorney closed his eyes.
Adrian was destroying his own case.
For once, he knew it.
And did it anyway.
“I was angry,” he said. “I believed being the father meant I was owed control. I was wrong.”
The judge studied him.
“Are you waiving your parental rights?”
Adrian looked at me.
“No.”
My stomach tightened.
“I want the chance to earn a relationship with my daughter. But I’m not asking the court to punish Emma for protecting her.”
The judge dismissed the emergency petition.
Temporary physical custody remained with me.
Adrian received no visitation until the criminal investigation cleared him.
Outside the courtroom, reporters crowded the steps.
Adrian stopped beside me.
“I meant what I said.”
“I know.”
“You don’t believe me?”
“I believe you meant it today.”
That hurt him.
He nodded anyway.
Fair.
People did not become trustworthy because they managed one decent act.
Daniel received a call.
His face changed.
“What happened?” I asked.
He turned the screen toward me.
Carter Holdings stock had fallen thirty percent.
Banks were demanding immediate repayment.
Richard had triggered debt clauses before disappearing.
“If the company collapses,” Daniel said, “the trust assets could become worthless.”
Adrian looked at the report.
“My father built a kill switch.”
“For the company?”
“For anyone who tried to take it from him.”
Vanessa stepped closer.
“There’s one way to stop it.”
Adrian’s expression hardened.
“No.”
“What way?” I asked.
Vanessa hesitated.
Then she said it.

“Emma has to marry Adrian again.”
