My Ex-Husband Invited Me to His Wedding—Then Found Me Holding the Baby Who Inherited His Entire Empire

I almost let the call ring out.

But the moment Adrian Carter's name flashed across my phone, something inside me went cold.

Six months.

That was all it had taken for my ex-husband to replace me.

Outside a cathedral in Manhattan, he stood surrounded by white roses, cameras, and hundreds of guests waiting for the ceremony to begin.

"Emma," he said with effortless cheer, "I wanted you to hear it from me before anyone else."

Behind him, a string quartet drifted through the air.

Champagne glasses clinked.

People laughed.

Everything sounded expensive.

Everything sounded rehearsed.

"I'm marrying Vanessa today."

I lowered my eyes.

A newborn baby girl slept peacefully against my chest, wrapped in a pale pink hospital blanket.

She was only a few hours old.

The monitors beside my bed beeped softly.

Rain slid down the window overlooking Brooklyn while the sharp scent of disinfectant lingered in the quiet hospital room.

"Congratulations," I replied.

He laughed.

The same arrogant laugh I had heard for years.

"You always were emotionally distant. That's probably why our marriage failed."

I didn't bother correcting him.

There was no point arguing with someone who had rewritten history so many times that he believed his own lies.

"What do you want, Adrian?"

"Vanessa suggested something mature."

He paused dramatically.

"We'd like you to come to the wedding."

I almost smiled.

Vanessa.

My former assistant.

The woman who complimented my clothes every morning.

Who memorized exactly how I liked my coffee.

Who secretly forwarded my confidential emails to my own husband.

Who somehow always happened to be on every one of Adrian's "business trips" to Chicago...

Miami...

Los Angeles.

Now she was wearing the white dress that used to belong to my future.

"It'll give everyone closure," Adrian continued.

"No bitterness."

"No resentment."

"We can all move on."

I looked down at my daughter.

Her tiny fingers had wrapped themselves around my hospital gown with surprising strength.

"I just gave birth," I said calmly.

"I'm not going anywhere."

Silence.

Not awkward silence.

Shocked silence.

Even through the phone, I could hear the music continuing behind him.

The guests kept talking.

Someone laughed.

But Adrian didn't.

"What did you just say?"

"I gave birth."

His breathing changed instantly.

"When?"

"Today."

Another long silence.

Then came the question.

The only question that truly mattered.

"...Whose baby is it?"

Months earlier, that question would have destroyed me.

Back then, I was still the woman who cried through divorce hearings while Adrian sat calmly beside his attorneys, convincing everyone I was unstable...

Too emotional...

Too obsessed with saving a marriage that was already dead.

He walked away with the Manhattan apartment.

Most of our investments.

Control of Carter Holdings.

And somehow...

Everyone believed he was the victim.

But that version of Emma no longer existed.

I gently adjusted the blanket around my daughter.

"You signed every document without reading it," I said quietly.

"You always hated details."

His voice became hoarse.

"Emma..."

"Tell me that baby isn't mine."

I turned toward the rain-covered window.

The city lights shimmered across the wet streets below.

Beautiful.

Cold.

Unreachable.

"Go marry your bride, Adrian."

I ended the call.

Exactly twenty-eight minutes later...

My hospital room door burst open.

Adrian stormed inside, still wearing his black tuxedo.

His bow tie hung loose around his neck.

His hair was soaked with sweat despite the cold weather.

His face had lost every trace of color.

Right behind him came Vanessa.

Still wearing her wedding gown.

Her long veil dragged across the hospital floor.

Diamond earrings trembled as she struggled to catch her breath.

Neither of them spoke.

They both stared at the baby sleeping peacefully in my arms.

Adrian's entire body went rigid.

His eyes moved slowly from the infant...

To me...

Then back again.

His lips parted.

"You planned this," he whispered.

I met his eyes without blinking.

"No."

My voice was calm enough to hurt.

"You planned it yourself."

May you like

For the first time since I had ever known Adrian Carter...

I watched genuine fear replace his confidence.
