Chapter 17 - The Truth Adrian Buried

Adrian denied it.

Too quickly.

“I didn’t know.”

Vanessa laughed from the police car.

“You saw the email.”

“What email?”

“The one I sent you after Emma’s blood test.”

Adrian looked at me.

“I never opened it.”

Vanessa leaned toward the window.

“You replied.”

Silence.

Daniel obtained the file that afternoon.

The email subject was simple.

Emma is pregnant.

Vanessa had sent it two weeks before Adrian filed for divorce.

His reply contained four words.

Handle it. Not my problem.

I read the sentence until it blurred.

Adrian stood across the conference room.

“I thought she meant the press.”

“What press?”

“There had been rumors about our marriage.”

“You replied to an email saying I was pregnant.”

“I didn’t read the full message.”

“The subject was the full message.”

He sat down.

For once, he didn’t argue.

“I saw it.”

My throat tightened.

“I told myself it was another attempt to stop me from leaving.”

“So you knew.”

“I suspected.”

“You knew enough to ask questions.”

“Yes.”

“And you chose not to.”

“Yes.”

That was the end of something.

Not our marriage.

That had ended long ago.

The last small belief that perhaps Adrian had only been foolish.

He had been cruel.

Not loudly.

Not dramatically.

He had looked at the possibility of his own child and decided it was inconvenient.

I removed my wedding ring.

The temporary marriage agreement still needed to survive until the restructuring closed.

Five days.

I placed the ring on the table.

“I’ll complete the company transfer.”

He nodded.

“After that, we’re done.”

“I understand.”

“No, you don’t.”

I pushed the printed email toward him.

“One day, Lily may ask why you weren’t there.”

His eyes filled.

“I’ll tell her the truth.”

“You’d better.”

“I’ll tell her I failed.”

“You didn’t fail like someone who tried and made a mistake.”

He lowered his head.

“I know.”

“You chose yourself.”

“Yes.”

The honesty did not make it better.

It only made it final.

Adrian signed an amendment surrendering all immediate parental claims.

Future visitation would require therapy, court review, and my consent.

He also transferred half of his personal shares into Lily’s trust.

Not as punishment.

Not as a grand gesture.

As restitution.

It still wasn’t enough.

Nothing could be.

That evening, the restructuring committee approved the new corporate structure.

Carter Holdings was saved.

Employees kept their jobs.

Richard lost all voting power.

The temporary purpose of our marriage was complete.

Daniel prepared the annulment filing.

Then the district attorney called.

Richard had agreed to cooperate.

But only if he could speak to me alone.

“What does he want?” I asked.

May you like

“To tell you who Lily’s real father is.”
