Chapter 1 - The Call He Should Never Have Made

My ex-husband called me from the steps of his own wedding.
I answered while holding the daughter he didn’t know existed.
“Emma,” Adrian said, almost laughing, “I wanted you to hear it from me first.”
Behind him, bells rang over Manhattan.
A string quartet played somewhere near the cathedral entrance.
People cheered.
Cameras clicked.
Everything sounded expensive.
Everything sounded fake.
“I’m marrying Vanessa today.”
I looked down at the newborn sleeping against my chest.
Her tiny mouth twitched.
One hand had escaped the pink blanket and curled around my finger.
“Congratulations,” I said.
Adrian laughed.
That same smug laugh I had heard in boardrooms, restaurants, and eventually divorce court.
“You always were cold.”
I said nothing.
Rain tapped against the hospital window.
A nurse quietly adjusted the medication hanging beside my bed, then stepped away when she realized I was on the phone.
“What do you want, Adrian?”
“Vanessa thought it would be mature if you came.”
“To your wedding?”
“It would show people there’s no resentment.”
I almost laughed.
Vanessa had been my assistant.
She used to bring me coffee every morning.
She remembered my birthday.
She once held my hand in a restroom while I cried over Adrian’s constant disappearances.
Then she went back to the office and forwarded my private legal strategy to him.
“I just gave birth,” I said.
The music behind him continued.
Adrian stopped breathing.
“What?”
“I had a baby this morning.”
Silence.
Then his voice dropped.
“Whose baby?”
I stared out at Brooklyn through the wet glass.
“You signed every divorce document without reading it.”
“Emma.”
“You always hated details.”
“Tell me that child isn’t mine.”
My daughter made a small sound.
Not a cry.
Just a soft, sleepy breath.
It was enough.
Adrian heard it.
“Emma, don’t hang up.”
“Go marry your bride.”
I ended the call.
Twenty-eight minutes later, the door to my hospital room flew open.
Adrian stood there in his tuxedo, his bow tie hanging loose.
Vanessa was behind him in a white wedding gown.
Her veil dragged across the dirty floor.
Neither of them looked at me.
They stared at the baby.
Adrian took one step closer.
“She has my mother’s chin.”
Vanessa’s face tightened.
“That doesn’t mean anything.”
He ignored her.
“You knew you were pregnant during the divorce.”
“Yes.”
“You hid my child from me.”
“I protected her.”
“From what?”
I looked at Vanessa.
She stopped moving.
“From the people who forged my medical records.”
Adrian’s eyes flicked toward her.
Vanessa gave a nervous laugh.
“That’s insane.”
I reached into the drawer beside my bed.
Then I placed a thick envelope on the blanket.
Adrian opened it.
The first page was a laboratory report.
The second contained Vanessa’s electronic signature.
The third was a message she had sent to the private clinic.
Adrian read the final line twice.
Alter the fertility results. Make sure Mrs. Carter believes she cannot conceive.
His hand began to shake.
Vanessa took one step backward.
May you like
And the hospital door closed behind her.
