Chapter 14 - THE LAST MOVE

The truth came out faster than anyone expected.

Emails.

Financial records.

Hidden agreements.

Everything pointed back to Richard.

Sloane was not the mastermind.

She was hired.

Used.

And eventually abandoned.

After the hearing, Graham found Sloane outside.

For a moment, neither spoke.

“I loved you.”

Graham looked at her.

“I believe you thought you did.”

Her eyes filled.

“That’s not fair.”

“No.”

He shook his head.

“What you did to Maisie wasn’t fair.”

Sloane looked down.

“I was afraid.”

“Of what?”

“Of never being enough.”

Graham’s expression softened slightly.

Because he understood fear.

But understanding was not forgiveness.

“You were afraid.”

He paused.

“And you made a child afraid too.”

Sloane cried.

“I’m sorry.”

Graham looked at her.

“I hope someday you understand what you did.”

Then he walked away.

But the story wasn’t finished.

Because Richard disappeared.

And before leaving, he sent one final message.

A video.

Graham watched it alone.

Richard sat in his office.

“You think you won.”

Graham stared.

“You lost.”

Richard smiled.

“No.”

He leaned forward.

“You don’t know everything.”

The screen changed.

A document appeared.

A custody agreement.

Signed years earlier.

Before Emily died.

Graham’s face changed.

Because the signature at the bottom…

was his again.

Impossible.

Then Richard spoke.

“You don’t remember signing because you trusted the wrong people.”

Graham stopped breathing.

“What did you do?”

Richard smiled.

“I protected the family.”

The video ended.

Graham immediately called Daniel.

“Find out where that document came from.”

An hour later, Daniel called back.

His voice was different.

“Graham.”

“What?”

“There’s a problem.”

“What problem?”

“That document is real.”

Graham felt his stomach drop.

“What does it say?”

Daniel was silent.

Then:

“It says you agreed that if anything happened to your ability to parent…”

Graham waited.

“…Maisie would go to another guardian.”

“Who?”

May you like

Daniel whispered:

“Richard Grant.”
