Chapter 13 - THE PERSON WHO STARTED EVERYTHING

The court hearing began three days later.

Graham walked in holding Maisie’s hand.

She wore her favorite blue sweater.

The one Emily bought before she died.

“You scared?”

Graham asked.

Maisie nodded.

“A little.”

He squeezed her hand.

“You’re not alone.”

Inside the courtroom, Sloane sat with her attorney.

Richard sat behind her.

Like they were still one team.

Graham noticed something.

A new person sitting near the back.

An older woman.

Elegant.

Calm.

Watching everything.

He had never seen her before.

The hearing started.

Sloane’s lawyer presented their argument.

“Mr. Grant has become emotionally unstable.”

Graham almost smiled.

The same words.

The same story.

Then the lawyer continued.

“His refusal to accept professional recommendations has placed the child at risk.”

Graham looked at Maisie.

Then at the judge.

“My daughter was never the problem.”

The lawyer smiled.

“That is your opinion.”

“No.”

Graham placed documents on the table.

“That is what the evidence shows.”

The recordings.

The fake documents.

The forged signature.

Everything was presented.

For the first time…

Sloane looked nervous.

Then her attorney stood.

“We would like to introduce new evidence.”

Graham frowned.

A folder was placed before the judge.

Inside were old medical records.

Emily Grant’s records.

Graham’s face changed.

“What is this?”

Sloane’s lawyer spoke.

“Documents showing Maisie’s early childhood trauma.”

Graham stared.

They were using Emily.

Again.

But then something unexpected happened.

The older woman in the back stood.

“Your Honor.”

Everyone turned.

The judge looked surprised.

“Identify yourself.”

The woman walked forward.

“My name is Victoria Grant.”

Graham froze.

His grandmother.

The woman who had been gone for years.

The woman everyone thought had left the family forever.

“What are you doing here?”

Victoria looked at him.

“I came because they crossed a line.”

Silence.

The judge allowed her to speak.

Victoria looked at the documents.

“These records were stolen.”

Everyone went quiet.

“What?”

Victoria pointed toward Richard.

“My son removed them from my private files.”

Richard’s face changed.

Victoria continued.

“He used Emily’s medical history to build a case against his own granddaughter.”

Graham stared at his father.

“You used my wife?”

Richard looked away.

Then Victoria said the words that shocked everyone.

“Richard was not trying to remove Maisie.”

A pause.

“He was trying to remove Graham.”

The room froze.

Graham felt his heart stop.

“What?”

Victoria looked at him.

“Your father planned to declare you incapable of managing the company.”

The pieces finally connected.

Maisie wasn’t the target.

She was the weapon.

And Graham’s family had been willing to destroy a child…

to control him.
