Chapter 12 - THE TRUTH HIDDEN IN THE RECORDINGS

The police arrived the next morning.

The recording device was taken as evidence.

But Graham knew something.

Evidence was only useful if someone believed it.

And right now, Sloane had already built a story.

She was the caring future wife.

He was the angry father refusing help.

The truth had to be louder.

Daniel spent the entire day analyzing the files.

At midnight, he called.

“Graham.”

“What did you find?”

“Everything.”

Graham sat up.

“Talk.”

Daniel took a breath.

“The recordings weren’t for security.”

“Then what were they for?”

“To create a record.”

“A fake one?”

“Yes.”

Graham understood.

Sloane wasn’t just collecting information.

She was creating a story.

A story where Maisie looked unstable.

A story where Graham looked irresponsible.

A story where sending Maisie away seemed reasonable.

Then Daniel sent him a file.

A video.

Graham opened it.

It showed Sloane entering Maisie’s room.

She sat beside the little girl.

Her voice was soft.

Almost kind.

“Maisie, don’t you want Daddy to be happy?”

The little girl nodded.

“Then sometimes good girls have to make sacrifices.”

Graham’s hands tightened.

The video continued.

“If you go away for a little while, Daddy won’t be stressed anymore.”

Maisie looked confused.

“But I want Daddy.”

“I know.”

Sloane smiled.

“But Daddy needs peace.”

Graham stopped the video.

He couldn’t watch anymore.

Because that wasn’t discipline.

That was manipulation.

A child was being convinced that love had conditions.

That she had to disappear for someone else to be happy.

The next morning, Graham filed for emergency custody protection.

The court hearing was scheduled immediately.

But before he could leave…

Sloane appeared outside his house.

With cameras.

Reporters.

People from the neighborhood.

Graham stepped outside.

“What are you doing?”

Sloane looked sad.

Not angry.

Sad.

That was the image she wanted.

“I just want my family back.”

The cameras turned toward Graham.

She lowered her voice.

“Please stop making this worse.”

Graham stared.

“You brought cameras?”

“I wanted people to know the truth.”

“No.”

He looked directly at the reporters.

“She wanted a performance.”

Sloane’s eyes narrowed.

Then she whispered:

“You don’t understand.”

Graham stepped closer.

“What?”

Her smile disappeared.

“Your father wasn’t the only person planning this.”

Graham froze.

“What does that mean?”

Sloane looked toward the street.

A black SUV was parked nearby.

Someone was sitting inside.

Watching.

Then she said:

“The person who started this never planned for you to find out.”

The SUV drove away.

Graham stared after it.

Because suddenly he realized.

Richard and Sloane were only pieces.

Someone else was moving the board.
